Parents Divorce

Hi,

My parents are getting divorced. My mother seems to have decided to make it as difficult as possible and use up as much money as possible on legal fee`s. For both of them to be able to buy a flat and live comfortably, assets would have to be split 50/50. She insists that she will not settle for any less than she has now. The house was inherited by my dad, although a house (worth a fair amount less) had to be sold to allow them to move into this one, the previous house was owned 50/50 I believe.

She is saying that it will go to court and he will pay all the legal fee´s as it was him that decide to leave. He says he is willing to split everything 50/50 and they pay their own legal bills.

She is a very difficult and stubborn person, always has been, thinks she is always right. She told me that her legal fee´s are a fixed amount for the divorce but refused to show me the paperwork stating this.

The main problem that I see is that with a big legal bill, one or both of them won´t be able to afford a good place to live.

What are legal bills likely to be for a drawn out mortgage?
What happens if someone appears to be excessively using their solicitor?

If things were to be disputed in court then the fees can reach into the 10s of thousands!! Mediation would have to be attempted first to arrange a settlement and from my limited knowledge of divorce there are fixed rate companies out there from as little as £1000 pounds however there are sometimes stipulations that you get 2 email contacts a week for your money if that!! What are the grounds for the divorce? It is not always the case that the other party will have to pay the legal fees
