Living together

Hello,
I've been living with my boyfriend for five months and it's been working really well. We love each other a lot.

Not always but, especially after a stressful day, I want to be on my own reading, watching a documentary on my own or just chilling out on my own, going for a walk or listening to music . I just don't want to see anyone!

Is this normal? I warned my boyfriend before we moved in that I needed this once or twice a week but I don't think he gets it and takes it personally. Am I being difficult?
Or how would you deal with it?

I’m exactly the same OP, I need my own space and need to be alone with my thoughts. Somebody rattling on would do my head in.

I’m so lucky DH does his sport, works brilliantly. Would hate some melt permanently hovering and being offended

I am the same, but my boyfriend totally understands because I just explained how I enjoy downtime on my own. I am quite an introverted person so need some alone time after being around people constantly.

Crunched · 08/03/2019 15:05

I’m the same and 30 years married.
My DH still finds it weird but now realises, if I get 45 mins space - maybe reading, watching TV or even a snooze - I am so much nicer to be around. I even have to do it on holiday.
When the DC were little I didn’t feel the need for a break from being sociable, but now they are 18 and up, I find a solid 15 hours with any of them stressful as well.
I think this stems from spending a lot of time alone as a child with my siblings being considerably (10 year +) older.

Thanks so much. Boyfriend is supportive and realises I need my down time
I don't think he gets it but he is understanding. I enjoy when he goes out and plays football or is away, makes me love the time we're together
I do sometimes worry he thinks it's about him and Im bored of him. He's definitely more tolerant of time together!
I'm pleased I'm not alone in this
I think he'll just have to accept it and understand I love my own company....

Im the same, although I am currently living only with my kids so its easier. My job involves interacting with the public all day, I'm also quite introverted and need time to myself, especially after spending all day dealing with peoples needs. . Its not weird, its just how you are

Deletemyname30 · 08/03/2019 15:34

Ah this is making me feel so much better. Think I'm going to have a chat with my lovely boyfriend and explain it a little more as I probably haven't been very clear but I don't want him to feel a little neglected either.
I feel so much better that I'm not alone

My dh likes his own space of hes stressed, as annoying as it is when he's got headphones in and can't hear me, in long term relationships it's normal to do your own stuff some of the time, whatever shape it takes for you

Mum4Fergus · 08/03/2019 15:47

DH and I are both like this. I know if he is playing an instrument of some description in the shed to leave him be...I have a chair in our bedroom that I take myself off to-it's my comfy place lol no-one comes near me when I'm in it.

pudding21 · 08/03/2019 15:56

I need my own space, every day, even if its just for 20 minutes.

Its like meditation for me, my head is so full of remembering everything for everyone, I need it to recharge my battery. I often just lie on the sofa and close my eyes, If I fall asleep for a nap, its a bonus :) :)

Disco3000 · 08/03/2019 16:04

We all need our own space. I usually take myself off into the bedroom with my book but often DH comes wandering in not long after because he's bored on his own. HE WAS WATCHING FOOTBALL!

Yanbu...I am like this too. Just need some peace now and then.

Needtobuildabridge · 08/03/2019 17:14

Just from the other perspective, my DP needs alone time to recharge and I fully accept and understand. I'm sure that yours will too :)

Deletemyname30 · 08/03/2019 17:59

Thank you. Sounds like I'm totally normal but I appreciate I probably need to communicate what I need to my boyfriend so we're both happy. Thank you
