Vaping is driving us apart

DH used to smoke, 10-15 a day. He smoked when I met him, but always outside, and always went to great lengths to clean his teeth etc after and not smell of it (I am a non smoker and I dislike the smell)

Three years ago he stopped smoking, but started vaping. In the house, everywhere. I HATE the smell of it. We've had countless rows about it and finally he's confined it to one room, but he stinks and his
breath stinks.

Everytime we row he promises to smoke a different type and smoke outside, which lasts maybe a few days then it's inside again.

I know it's an addition, and I know it's hard to give up but I'm not asking him to do that. I'm asking him to smoke it outside as I don't think I, or the DCs, should have to breathe this stuff in, and to find something that doesn't smell of these awful fake cherry or tobacco or whatever flavours that give me headaches and make me feel sick.

Does anyone have any advice? Can anyone recommend a scent-free vape?

I vape with flavourless juice as can’t stand the smell / taste of the flavoured ones. I get it from Vape UK. Just put ‘flavourless’ in the search box on the website and it should come up. Totally odourless.

Abouttimemum · 26/02/2019 18:33

It's just going from one addiction to another and utterly pointless. Get him to go outside. Or just not do it at all.

But then my husband smoked 40 a day between the age of 9 and 20, then one day just decided to stop and hasn't smoked another in the last 20 years. So maybe my view on how easy it is is scewed lol.

Vicky1990 · 26/02/2019 18:49

The answer to this is for him to give up this disgusting, smelly, lung damaging, expensive, selfish and unhealthy habit.
Take him to a lung cancer ward of your local hospital to see the terminally ill patients and ask them, do you wish you had given up smoking .
I would not live with someone who has such a disregard for me and my children.

Onemansoapopera · 26/02/2019 19:11

@vicky1990 , she doesn't want to hear that, she wants to hear how to make it easier for him to breathe out plumes of crap everywhere , apparently. But I'm with you.

SmellsLikeAdultSpirit · 26/02/2019 19:21

If someone is vaping nicotine they haven't given up they have just found a new way to get their fix

Middersweekly · 26/02/2019 19:31

I vape also but only menthol, I can’t stand any other flavours or smells. If he’s vaping tobacco scented vape then I can see your point as it stinks! If he still wants a flavour of some description, tell him to vape Heisenberg. Is like a berry menthol. It’s great that he’s made the switch from smoking cigarettes because it’s so much better for his health and yours!

Toomanycats99 · 26/02/2019 19:32

My ex swapped smoking for vaping. Again he always smoked outside etc. Switched to vaping and it was constantly in his hand. Used it far more than he smoked. Would wake up in bloody night and have a puff.

Chickenwing · 26/02/2019 19:36

Sounds like your problem so maybe you should be the one to go outside when he wants to vape 😂

bigchris · 26/02/2019 19:39

Vicky how's your halo?

JITSOG · 26/02/2019 19:44

bigchris

It’s not big nor nice to bully other posters for their opinions Hmm

bigchris · 26/02/2019 19:48

Bullying ?! Grin

TheCreativeLife · 27/02/2019 08:36

Thanks for the helpful posts, much appreciated.

Yes I'd rather he gave up but that's not easy. I'm trying to find a compromise because as a PP pointed out, it's not nice to be constantly moaning about it, for either of us.

Flavourless now on order. Fingers crossed.

@Abouttimemum of course it's not pointless.

It is a way of getting nicotine (which is what he is addicted to) in a much less harmful way which is cheaper and which most people find more pleasant to be around than cigarette smoke.

Sorry @SmellsLikeAdultSpirit that just posted too earky

If someone is vaping nicotine they haven't given up they have just found a new way to get their fix

I was going to say that that is exactly the point. It's nicotine replacement therapy.

I don't understand why there is so much vitriol towards vaping. Giving up cigarettes is incredibly hard. Anything that reduces the harm of smoking is a good thing surely.

Ffsnosexallowed · 27/02/2019 10:09

Vapers have found a way to get nicotine that's 95%safer than smoking, that there is no evidence of harm for bystanders, that is cheaper and that won't kill them.

Vicky1990 · 27/02/2019 17:54

They used to sell cigarettes by advertising that they were good for you.
Didn't the man (cowboy) who used to advertise Malborouge cigarettes on cinema screens die of lung cancer.
I used to smoke till I had a couple of health scares, had no trouble at all giving up as the alternative was a long illness followed by a nasty early death.
Smoking also caused the early death of my Mother and elder Brother, they didn't give up in time.
So all this bollocks about Vaping not harming you or the people around you forced to inhale the crap blown out of your mouth is only going to be believed by the most gullible.

TooTrueToBeGood · 27/02/2019 18:04

It may not be the flavour that's irritating you. Vape liquids are made up generally of Propylene Glycol (PG), and/or Vegetable Glycerine (VG), nicotine and flavouring. It's not uncommon for some individuals to be allergic to PG and for that reason some vapers use liquid that is VG only. Maybe get him to source some VG-only juice and see if that is less irritating for you. Most vape shops will stock VG-only juice.

GregoryPeckingDuck · 27/02/2019 18:08

Why is he vaping? If he did it to quit smoking then you need to explain to him that he is still damaging his lungs and increasing his risk of cancer and needs to actually quit. It’s like someone going from filterless cigarettes to cigarettes with filters and thinking that’s fine.

TheCreativeLife · 01/03/2019 17:53

Flavourless vape seems like it could be the answer!

OP posts:
withaheyandahoandaheyheyho · 01/03/2019 18:16

Maybe look at what kind of vaporiser he's using, too? Some of them seem to produce massive great clouds of vape where others don't, whilst still providing the same 'hit'.
That being said, it's meant to be a replacement for smoking. So of he used to smoke outdoors, why not vape out there too?

Rayne23 · 01/03/2019 21:15

I use a menthol flavour as well and as far as I can tell, the smell is subtle. I've had someone walk into the room after I've had a puff and say they can smell a slight minty smell.

I find I vape way more than I ever smoked, it's just there and easy to reach for. Although if I`m around people I don't tend to use it as I don't think its fair to be puffing the vape around them.

I am trying to start to cut down with the hope of stopping altogether. Im paranoid that in 10 years, theyll discover it isn't as safe as they say it is.

YesQueen · 01/03/2019 21:17

He isn't increasing the risk of cancer
Public health England and cancer research both strongly support vaping
If it didn't exist, I would still be on 30 a day

Nat6999 · 01/03/2019 21:23

Get your husband to stealth vape, inhale, hold it in & breathe in, hardly any vapour comes out, he gets the full effect of the nicotine & doesn't need to vape as much.

Nat6999 · 01/03/2019 22:16

likeACowsopinion The juices you pick up in supermarkets & corner shops aren't as good quality as ones from specialist vape shops & cost more per ml. I buy 100ml shake & vape, thicker juice, better taste & last longer, my vape set up won't take the thinner juices, burns them up in seconds & wreck your coils.

IAmMeThisIsI · 02/03/2019 00:29

They are safer. The NHS will soon be prescribing them to help smokers find a healthier replacement to cigarettes. It's extremely difficult to switch too. But it's a lot easier than stopping straight away, where most smokers fail. You start on high dose oil then gradually decrease.
