OH and I are separating. Anyone know if I would be liable for half of his personal debt, accumulated in his own name? Credit cards, personal loan etc. We both have separate finances. I’ve yet to see a solicitor.

From my own experience, you would not be liable for debt in his sole name.

lifegoes · 24/02/2019 10:09

From what I know, you are only liable if your name are on the cards/loan documents etc.

Are you married? I always thought if you're married then, yes you are liable for half the debts. If you're not married then you're definitely NOT unless you are named on them.

Yes, we are marrried but the debts are in his own name as we both have separate accounts. They weren’t debts for joint things if that makes sense.

You share assets and debts when you divorce, as I found to my cost

Sally2791 is right.

A real shit storm when you bought and own the house and he only ran up debts through your relationship.

My ex even tried to bring his student loans into the 'joint' pot when we divorced - from some 8 years before I ever met him!

Get yourself a free initial appointment with a solicitor and go there armed with a list of the general current circumstances and any questions you want to ask.

Good luck 💐
