Is this a crazy reason to be put off?!

He’s great so far...we’ve only been texting and one phone call after meeting online a week ago. First date this weekend. But..here goes..

I don’t like his name or his accent!

Stupid reason to be put off?

DH's name is rather old-fashioned and not the nicest, but he's always been Chicken to me Grin and he has a Dublin accent Wink

SouthernComforts · 21/02/2019 22:57

I stopped seeing someone because they claimed they'd never heard of the song Proud Mary.

ShadyLady53 · 21/02/2019 22:59

I think the name thing is a little unreasonable but I did once really go off a guy mainly based on how much his voice irritated me so I can understand the accent thing. This guy had quite an immature babyish voice at times that also went in a downward inflection (a bit like Gary Barlow) so he always sounded really dull no matter how passionate he was about the subject he was talking about. I really tried but at times I wanted to scream because he just sounded so flat and “weak”...and I don’t get angry easily.

So bottom line...if you can’t deal with it you can’t deal with it. If it’s annoying you now imagine putting up with in day in day out for 30+ years!

patientzero · 21/02/2019 23:02

My husband’s name is my least favourite male name. He can’t spell either. Both things that grated on me at first but I decided not to be a dick and see what happened. Best decision I ever made.

bukowskibabe · 21/02/2019 23:02

Is he northern?

Does he dislike his name?

Mrsmummy90 · 21/02/2019 23:04

I'm really intrigued now 😂
Has he got a brummy accent?

Is his name Burt?

Coveredincathair · 21/02/2019 23:11

Brian & he’s from Liverpool.

donajimena · 21/02/2019 23:12

Do you watch GPs behind closed doors? Broad Yorkshire accents (to my Welsh ears) I don't think you can say someone's accent is working class these days.
I do favour some accents over others though. Geordie is my absolute favourite.

Parthenope · 21/02/2019 23:21

But yeah it’s woeking class I guess. I don’t want to be snobby, guess I just find it unusual!

But you are being snobby, if you're so surprised that a working-class man is a consultant, and you think that his accent indicates stupidity. Or is it that you think he should have shed it?

junebirthdaygirl · 22/02/2019 04:44

Sometimes accents are stronger on the phone so in person it might not be as strong. Fall in love and you will love his name!!! You will be calling your chilren after him.

user3910 · 22/02/2019 08:52

I guess I am being snobby but I don’t mean to be! I don’t think he shouldn’t be a doctor because of his accent! It is just unusual to me.

Probably need to get over myself Grin

OP posts:
Hellohappiness · 22/02/2019 08:56

Are you questioning if he is a doctor at all?

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 22/02/2019 09:05

I don't wish to bring down the tone of the thread, but if it was me I'd just get him to put on his scrubs, tell him not to speak and give him a good rogering.
Unless his name is Roger!

Didiusfalco · 22/02/2019 09:26

This is so superficial - You sound like a complete snob (which is not an attractive trait either!) Give yourself a bit of a talking to, do you really want to be that judgemental shallow person?

RelaisBlu · 22/02/2019 09:56

SouthernComforts I'm not sure I have either

CloudsCloudsClouds · 22/02/2019 09:59

I think you’re being quite unpleasant and I feel sorry for the poor bloke. What’s a ‘working class accent’ anyway? I hope you never need hospital treatment from a consultant with an accent that makes them ‘sound thick’. Move on and have a (middle class?) word with yourself FFS.

user3910 · 22/02/2019 13:17

This was meant to be a lighthearted thread! I’m not snobby (honest!). Maybe this was a snobby comment but it wasn’t meant like that.

I just found it usual and a bit off putting...it is a silly reason though, just wondered if others had experienced it!

OP posts:
user3910 · 22/02/2019 13:17

Happiness... not questioning if he is a doctor. Already checked that out.

Crunchymum · 22/02/2019 14:00

Norman, Gilbert, Barry???

Seeleyboo · 22/02/2019 14:21

I'd say ditch him. Give him a lucky escape. Poor bloke.

maras2 · 22/02/2019 14:25

If it'sTarquin Fintin Finbin Bostock F'tang F'tang Ole Biscuit Barrel.
With an Africaans/Boer accent.
You may have my very first LTB Grin

Parthenope · 22/02/2019 14:29

Maybe I'm too unsophisticated to understand the distinction, but in what way was a judgement you admit yourself was snobbish not meant to be snobbish? That you posted out of purely unconscious snobbery and expected everyone to pile on the thread agreeing about how hilarious it is that Gary the Scouser is a medical consultant?

Wantmychildrentosleep · 22/02/2019 14:35

Is he called Martin and from Cumbria? If so I didn’t like his accent, name or the ketchup smeared over his t-shirt when I first met him at medical school (I was dating his house mate), but he really is lovely. Although I think he’s a GP now not a hospital consultant. Doctors have all sorts of accents.

user3910 · 22/02/2019 20:33

Not called Martin or from Cumbria!

From a small town in the south.

First impressions are very important, and go on to effect our relationship with a person. If your first impressions of him were so negative, then he's not for you.
