Would you spend this?

Won't bore you with the backstory but the last 3 years have been tight financially. I saved to buy a house on my own and had not a penny to spare, bought the house, spent every spare penny buying furniture for it and then sorting a car for work... normal life stuff!

I've only recently managed to start saving again and have built up a small amount of savings.

A friend wants to go on the trip of a lifetime this summer (booked with her other half who has since broken up with her...). it is somewhere I want to go but feel a bit reckless that it would leave me with 1,000 left. I am single also so no complication with spending in terms of a significant other. Although I can save a few hundred a month, I am aware it isn't a huge amount should a boiler break etc!

would you go? is it reckless or have I got an over the top view of spending after taking so long to save for the house? do people go on holiday with only 1,000 left to their name?!

It depends how much the holiday is. I wouldnt spend 10k on a holiday for example

insiderrelly · 17/02/2019 11:42

Holiday is less than 3k. It isn’t somewhere I would go on my own. I think I’ve made the decision! It is definitely strange saving for something that’s a luxury rather than something of a necessity!

If it’s not somewhere you’d go on your own but it’s a definite bucket list destination then on balance I would probably take the risk and go for it (while also saving madly in any other areas I could) Flowers have a lovely time!

Singlenotsingle · 17/02/2019 11:48

Treat yourself. You might not get the chance again, you should enjoy these experiences while you can. This time next year you might have a baby and never be able to go!

DisplayPurposesOnly · 17/02/2019 11:50

Happy holiday Grin. Definitely sounds like opportunity has knocked: open the door and let it in

mathsquestions · 17/02/2019 11:52

Cos you’re worth it

PinkiOcelot · 17/02/2019 11:52

Get yourself away OP!! Enjoy! You can worry about the boiler (or anything really) when you get back x

insiderrelly · 17/02/2019 11:53

Single - I wish! Would love nothing more than that! X

You might meet your stb husband on holiday 😉

ColdFingered · 17/02/2019 12:02

I must be unusual, in that I wouldn't go. To be left with £1k in savings is nothing. There's the whole of the rest of your life to go on a holiday of a lifetime, when you're on a more even financial footing. It's only a one-off chance, because someone else has organised it. You could plan to do it in a couple of years, when you know you have enough saved.

Instead of a holiday costing almost £3k, I'd go on a cheap holiday that I'd enjoy, satisfied in the knowledge that I was building savings for my future.

Mishappening · 17/02/2019 12:06

When you are in your care home, will you look back and think "Oh how wonderful I was to keep all that dosh in the bank" Otr would you like to look back and think "Wow that was a great trip!" I know which I would prefer.

PS Old age comes around quicker than you think!!!

ColdFingered · 17/02/2019 12:09

It's not a case of being in a care home, though, is it? It's a case of having enough savings to cope with losing your job, being ill, needing a house repair etc. You can have a great holiday, just somewhere cheaper this year.

Omg of course go

insiderrelly · 17/02/2019 12:28

Thanks for all the replies! By the time I go I could probably have about 1700 in savings at a push. So it’s not terrible but feels on the edge!

Oh god, just go. Sure you could have 2 weeks in a caravan somewhere for cheaper, but probably ultimately not that much cheaper, given what you'd be missing out on.

Travel broadens the mind. It can give you a kind of wealth that is quite different to money in the bank. And you'll still have money in the bank anyway, because you already have enough saved!

zenasfuck · 17/02/2019 12:41

Life is for living and none of us know how long we are here for

You have done so well to save and buy and furnish a house , allow yourself to enjoy it now

You have disposable income every month so you have a cushion

No point in dying rich, you can't take it with you

YogaWannabe · 17/02/2019 12:43

Oh go go go!
I live alone (well with DD!) and own my home and yes shit happens (and I never have a spare 1k knocking around when it does!) but things always work themselves out.
We always remember our trips away more than the week we had no boiler and had to bunk in together etc!

RoseOfSharyn · 17/02/2019 12:44

A friend once said to me 'no one ever says at a funeral "he had a really nice kitchen", they always talk about the great person he was and the fun things he did.'
I say do it.

ColdFingered · 17/02/2019 12:52

You can be a great person and do fun things while making sure you have a decent safety net. They are two separate things. Grin

0nedayatat1me7 · 17/02/2019 13:09

Go on the holiday !

yearinyearout · 17/02/2019 14:53

Life is too short. Just go. If you were going into debt to pay for it that would be different but you'll still have £1k left. It's a no brainer for me!

DrMorbius · 17/02/2019 15:17

A few people have mentioned losing your job. If you have travelled a bit, you are more likely to get a job

When interviewing I certainly lean massively towards people with get up and go. Further I have NEVER asked an interviewee how much they have in the bank.

carrotflinger · 17/02/2019 15:39

Go.
You'll be able to build up the savings quickly again as long as you have a secure job and aren't splashing out on random things all the time.

winterisstillcoming · 17/02/2019 19:44

Get boiler cover and then go!
