Applying for Universal credit

Hi, just wanted some advice as I’m getting nowhere emailing citizens advice as they take so long to reply.

I’ve moved out of my house temporarily to my mums as my husbands aggression towards me after I asked for a divorce is getting worse and I don’t want my daughter (2) to hear it anymore.

I just wanted to know whether I would be entitled to universal credit. I currently work part time (16 hrs) and don’t have acccess to husbands money and no maintenance at the moment so getting short every month!??

Yes you should be.

If you go on the “entitledto” website they have a benefit calculator. If you put in your circumstances (anonymously) it will tell you what and how much you can claim.

Try the benefits calculator here

You are a single parent only working part time so you should be entitled to something. Also contact CMS as he should be contributing financially for his child.

Hello, yes I did the check and it said something like £500 + the child benefit I get already. I just wondered if you can get it if still married? Should I just apply and see what happens?

Yes, you're separated, so as long as you are not together, you can claim.

Fairylea · 09/02/2019 08:07

It doesn’t matter that you’re married - it’s whether you’re living together and / or paying bills together that counts. Since you’re living with your mum and can prove you’ve separated it should be okay.
I claimed as a single parent when I separated from now ex dh.

Ok, I do still pay the bills at my house tho, always have done! Will that effect my claim?

No don't include your child's savings

Senseiwu · 09/02/2019 10:30

Don't worry about bills etc just make the claim asap - takes 6 weeks to be processed
