Summer holidays - when do you have yours:)

There are six weeks of the summer holidays, if I go away with dcs it’s always at the beginning or middle, I make sure the last week or two are free for getting ready to go back, winding down, uniform, bags, new shoes etc and just generally preparing to go back after the long holiday. Recently I was told that most people actually go away at the end of the holidays (last week) so I thought I’d ask you lovely mumsnetters:) when would/do you go on holidays over the summer holidays? And is my plan for summer completely wrong? Thank you for reading, any views much appreciated:)

Have done a mixture of beginning, middle and end. Just whenever is the absolute cheapest. But we get 2 months off here in N.I.

The holiday at the beginning made the holidays feel long, last year we did the 2nd last week and we had something to look forward to but I felt really rushed to get organised for school when I got back. Even though I had done a lot before going but it's amazing how much u need to get for 3 kids.

So ideally the middle is best but as I said getting the cheapest holiday is the most important thing for me.

I normally buy all the uniforms (apart from shoes) before the end of term, saves a lot of hassle.
We tend to go on holiday in the last 2 weeks of August (so DS can have his birthday abroad.)
The way it normally works is
Week 1 - chill out, Kids relax at home / with friends
Week 2&3 - have some days out here. Normally the weather is fine.
Week 4- get ready for hol
5&6 - away!
We always aim to get back for around the 30th Aug so there's a few days grace before back to school.

I'm dreading it this year - DD finishes boarding school and is off to uni, and DS starts secondary in Sept. Momentous changes ahead Sad

We don't go away during the summer holidays unless it's a city break for a couple of days. The flights are generally reasonable and much the same price as the rest of the year eg we did three days in Berlin for £400.00 - flights and four star hotel last August. I've no interest in paying exorbitant amounts to go away to a resort or U.K. touristy area to mill around in crowds with everyone else doing the same. We take our holidays at Feb or Oct half term or Easter Holidays.

I haven’t been away for some time but in the days when I did, I liked to go at the start of the six weeks holiday. I have noticed though that package holidays are a bit cheaper at the end of August especially if you can go slightly into September.

I have also been away in the uk to the south west at the end of August and it was relatively quiet because the schools in that area had gone back.

Depends on what else is happening and prices - it's usually cheaper to go the day school finishes here, we finish on 6 July this year.

I'm with you! Both of our children are August birthdays (16th and 27th) is we like to be at home for them. Plus we have our own business and year end is 31st July so we try to utilise early August!
