When and where did you meet? Feeling like it won’t happen

When and where did you meet your partner?

I date all the time (stopped recently). Just can’t seem to find the right one, yet I know people who walk into new relationships within a year or less after the previous one has ended. It’s been over a year since my last relationship and I’m losing all hope.

Online, 9 years ago after about 18 months of online dating. It was a last resort kind of thing, we’d been emailing for ages while I was dating other people, I didn’t think he would be exciting enough.
I knew in the first 5 minutes of our date.
I went on a lot of really bad dates! My match subscription was about to run out so I thought I may as well!
I’m not sure I could be bothered with it all again if I found my self single. I feel too old and tired now 😂

LaughingCow99 · 27/01/2019 20:18

Some people will date anyone. Be happy single, if you aren't, learn to be. Sounds like you need some time out from dating. It's quality, not quantity.

ComtesseDeSpair · 27/01/2019 20:19

In a nightclub, both wearing masks, absolutely high as kites. Electric chemistry and he made me laugh loads. We spent most of the night dancing together and then exchanged numbers and went to our respective after-parties separately. I didn’t expect to hear from him again, but I did the following afternoon. I’d been single (and happy with it and intending to stay that way) for ages, but he had something I wanted to see more of.

It can happen anywhere, really. OLDing is a good way to meet a wide variety and number of people and I have friends it’s worked for. But I also have friends who met partners in coffee shops, through hobbies and through other friends. A colleague met her now husband because for about a year they always ended up standing next to each other on the train on their morning commute and went from “commuting buddies” to a date to a relationship.

User200001 · 27/01/2019 20:20

Aw I like the train buddy thing!

I’d much rather meet someone in real life than online.

Through a friend. Meant to be a bit of fun as we're both into the same things. He just never left 😂 i gave up actively looking for someone years ago

baileys6904 · 27/01/2019 20:21

I was 38, had given up on mr right completely and resigned myself (and had become actually happy and contented with) being on my own.

To the point when we did arrange a first date, I was ready to back out as I was happy as I was and didn't need the bother (i shaved my legs for the summer months only lol). He was someone is worked with 10 years prior and had split up from his wife a couple of years before.

I am so glad I went and can honestly say I have never been happier. We've been together 6 years now, and more than content. We are one of those cringe couples that are geeks together, hold hands in public and get all canoodly ha ha. I couldn't have asked for more so don't give up x

A mutual friend at work set us up 6 months ago. I separated from my husband in 2015, and i had three years of online dating and casual relatiinships.... but nothing serious. In May, i found myself sitting in the garden sobbing into my prosecco because i was so terminally single. Then at the beginning of July, my friend at work set me up with a friend of hers - and we hit it off very quickly. Six months down the line, we're mad about each other and everything is going so, so well.

So, dont give up hope. Love turns up in the strangest places.

Broke up with long term ex, went on night out with sisters to celebrate my new single status. Met future husband in bar! Spent next year telling him I wanted to be single till it dawned on me he was a keeper. Mildly annoying he came long before I’d had time to sow my wild oats (!) but been together 14 years and married 10 now.

LizzieSiddal · 27/01/2019 20:24

On holiday.

I really was not looking for a partner as had recently come out if a 5 year relationship. I did not want a boyfriend.
But met Dh and fell head over heels.

BippityBoppityBogOff · 27/01/2019 20:26

Broke up with long term horrible ex. Decided to take a break from work and got a part time job in a coffee shop to keep my mind occupied and figure out where my life was going next.
Ended up marrying the owner of the coffee shop!

MissLanesAmericanCousin · 27/01/2019 20:26

I met DH 16 years ago whilst we were both working at a used bookstore. At first I thought he was a jock, turned out he wasn't as was just as nerdy as I am. I also thought he was too young (very early 20's) but decided on a fling, so I asked him if he wanted to see a show. He thought I meant the theatre. LOL! Grin
It was only supposed to last a few weeks, but one thing turned into another and as they say, the rest is history! [smile0

Try not to worry about when you will meet the "one". I know that's a lot easier to say than to do, as I thought I'd never get married. But, life has a way of sneaking up on you when you least expect it. So, when you least expect it, expect it.

Good luck! Smile

elQuintoConyo · 27/01/2019 20:28

At work. Sounds rather boring! But I'd just finished a going-nowhere post-uni relationship and then left the country. I met now-DH on day 1 at work. The very last thing I was looking for was another relationship, I thought I'd just shag my way around the Med for a year or so Grin before going back to the UK for a normal life.

I'm still in the Med! With a child and a dog and a view of the sea, 20 years later.

It sounds trite, but be happy in yourself x

Boysandbuses · 27/01/2019 21:10

I met DP within 2 weeks of leaving exh He is a relative of my best friend who is known a few years. Never met him though.

Took us a while to get together. Just over a year, in fact.

snowgirl1 · 27/01/2019 23:03

Met DH through on-line dating. I was on a site let you enter what distance you were willing to consider matches from and I'd put 10 miles, I think. He contacted me and was a long way outside the 10 mile distance, so we just chatted on-line and emailed each other while we both carried on going on other dates. Eventually, 3 months later, we finally met. We've been together for nearly 14 years now, married 11 years.

HeavensNoHellYeah · 27/01/2019 23:11

At his ex's house completely out of the blue and hit me like a ton of bricks.

Jduh · 27/01/2019 23:19

Met DH online when Faceparty was still a thing 14 years ago. I was 18, he's was 19 and we'd seen each other around at college. Officially spoke via DMs online and then met up and the rest is history.
His best friend at the time was dating my best friend at the time but paths never crossed that way.

SleepingStandingUp · 27/01/2019 23:23

Online dating - POF. I'd been single for since 24, we met when i was 29. Plenty of unsuccessful dates before.

Moved in together after 4 months, engaged at 6 months, married at 18 months, pregnant at 3 years.

It can and will happen when you least expect it

thaegumathteth · 27/01/2019 23:46

I’m a club when we were both wasted. Think it’s a relatively rare way of meeting someone though tbh. Most people I know met through school / uni / work / friends rather than random strangers. We’ve been together almost 20 years so hopefully wasn’t a bad idea ...
