Joint counselling with young DC

DP and I are not in a good place at the moment, we have tried to work on the relationship ourselves but it’s not helping. We would both like to try counselling but I just can’t see how to make it work. We both work full time with 30 minute commutes. One DC is at school where we live, other is at nursery at my work. Our family and friends are a long way away so no baby sitters we can rely on.

Has anyone had couples counselling in similar circumstances? How did you make it work?

Will your employer allow you to leave your youngest in the work creche while you attend appointments?

Sparky888 · 30/12/2018 07:40

We have a 7.10pm appt and a babysitter - a faff, but worth it x

Grobagsforever · 30/12/2018 07:43

You need a babysitter, but I don't think that was your real question was it?

Bearsinmotion · 30/12/2018 07:50

Baby sitter is not an option unfortunately.

Could leave young DC at nursery.

How often do you normally have sessions? Weekly would be hard to justify. Monthly would be ok, but would we need more?

Can I ask Sparky why it is worth it? How has it helped you?

There aren't many counsellors that would see you monthly. It just wouldn't work.

Why isn't a babysitter an option?

Bearsinmotion · 30/12/2018 07:58

DP has MH issues, couldn’thandle a stranger in the house.

Some counsellors will do Skype appointments

Bearsinmotion · 30/12/2018 08:13

Oo, thanks supercatlady, that might be an option!

Try the Tavistock? Does Skype.

CoffeeAtCentralPerk · 30/12/2018 09:11

The NHS run couples counselling with a service called Therapy For You.

They offer weekend appointments but the waiting time for weekend slots can be slightly longer.

Bearsinmotion · 30/12/2018 10:12

Is this the Tavistock?

Yes, we did our counselling there for about 6 months. It's once a week. And tbey are reasonably priced compared to others in central London. How much you pay, depends on your income.

Bearsinmotion · 30/12/2018 10:21

We are not based in London but the online course might just work. Thank you everyone!

They are the gold standard in couples therapy

The other thing that is good I have heard is emotion focused therapy

A few do this via Skype
