Interpreting men speak!

Bit of a random one - but I find it interesting how we all interpret things differently, and would love to know what others think.

At my old job, I was sort of seeing a colleague (I know, a big no no!). Our relationship wasn't common knowledge.
But I met up with a former colleague a couple of weeks ago, and she told me that he had told her about 'us'. She similarly has got close/into a relationship with somebody else at the company.
He told her we had a 'connection' and were 'closer than usual'.
Now during our relationship, we were never clear with one another about our feelings. Though acknowledged there was always 'something there'.
This was mostly because we knew what tricky territory we were in, being colleagues. Which did add to tension between us.
I guess what I'm trying to grasp, is that he clearly hasn't gone into detail about our relationship; but how would you interpret what he's said if you were my former colleague?

He was sleeping with you.

He was sleeping with you —and I’ll bet he will imminently try and sleep with your colleague—.

Sounds like he has been put in a position where he feels he can't outright lie and deny anything so is skirting around the specifics whilst disclosing a bit. Maybe because he wants to try it on with her, or maybe because he knows or thinks you don't want anyone to know still.

She said she got the feeling he was sad that we had ended.
I don't think he is trying it on with her (I may be naive here). She is far too preoccupied with the other guy.
I think he told her, to show empathy to her situation. Management have spoken to her, and told her to 'rein in' her relationship.
But yes he does know I don't want it to be public knowledge.
