Is it always wrong to call someone 'stupid'?

I think it is.

If you asked someone if they were interested in getting to know you properly and they said 'of course I am stupid'

What would you think? To me it suggests abusive.

This is another instance where it requires thought and judgement as to the intent of the user.

Where I’m from, that was a common comment meaning it’s a no brainier/obvious and nothing to do with being stupid.

It worries me it’s more common now not to bother thinking about intent and just expect everyone use language in the same way.

Of course it's not abusive here! They're telling you that 'of course they want to get to know you & how could doubt it' - it's semi-affectionate. It's like saying 'don't be daft, of course I want to get to know you'. Totally different to your mother.
