I have lived with my partner for years.Originally I put more money into the property than him about 50% more and over the years he has renovated the property. We are now selling and splitting the money from the house equally which is fair as he has done the work. However, after viewing another renovation project and agreeing to buy it my partner now wants me to pay him £100 per day for working on the renovation. I have worked hard and have savings he is aware of. The plan was to use my savings to renovate the property and for him to carry out the extensive work required. I think he is taking advantage of my better financial position and I am considering backing out of the sale and buying a property of my own. He cannot see that I feel he is taking advantage of me. I earn a lot more than him and want to retire soon.I don't think paying your partner a wage is normal in a relationship. He will profit from my investment as the house will be in both names and mortgage free. What do you think?

I think you should sell as is, and split the money. Then keep your finances separate after that. Maybe see a solicitor about drawing up an agreement to keep your money safe.

Sorry again miss read the question. Yes back out of the sale. Buy your own place, and if you want to live together see a solicitor about drawing up an agreement to keep your assets safe.

Tell him that's fine and you'll have the property in your own name and he doesn't get a share

Thanks. Sometimes we know what is best but we get confused by our feelings. I will be putting it to him that I intend to buy my own place.
It will be interesting to see what he has to say!

If he doesn't work on the renovation, would you need to pay someone to do it? If that's the case then 'pay' your oh 50% of the normal wage to carry out the work. His time, talent and effort is as valuable a contribution as your financial one!

So will he put 50% if the deposit down, pay 50% of the mortgage, and take 50% ofthe equity when you eventually sell? If yes, then he pays 50% of parts and material and you pay him £100 per day.

If he’s not taking any of the equity out then then yes you may need to pay him (you’d have to pay a tradesman to do it), however is he also paying 50% of the household expenditure and you some rent? If he’s living rent free then maybe not.

Lots of variables op depending on what he’s already paid, paying or will take out of the house

So you have to pay for the renovation and also pay him to do the work? And he will profit from it? He needs to either go 50/50 on costs for renovation and you pay him 50% wages or not at all as what he is asking is not fair
