I once taught in a school with a women's refuge in its catchment area (obviously had to be a very well-kept secret). I agree about early intervention; these children were with mothers who had finally made the break, literally in fear of their lives, yet when their daughters reached the age to start having boyfriends, they would often go for the same personality type, as in their minds, that was how a real, dominant male asserted himself - more subtle than the little boys who clearly thought that, once they were big and strong enough, they could bulldoze their way through life.
Therapy would have been immensely time-consuming, probably expensive, but I sometimes wonder how many of those unhappy children made their own children unhappy in their turn.

Why was the programme just about violent men? Don't violent women count? Another sexist programme from the gender biased BBC. No mention of little Miss manipulative who lies about violent husband so she can persuade the courts to give her exclusive rights to bringing up the children. As if we haven't got enough on our plates already; female led monarchy, female prime minister, not to mention the huge bias in the amount of time we get off from work when the children are born whilst simultaneously demanding to get equal pay even though we have been away looking after child for god knows how many months. There's so much responsibility for myself it's a wonder how I have time to complain.

Hmm

Omg wtf have I just read? ERII dismantling the patriarchy! 🤣

headinhands · 10/10/2018 07:58

Crikey non. Everyone is much much more likely to be abused by a male partner. That's fact. It would be biased to dedicate half the time to violent women when in reality that's far removed from what data tells us.

demanding to get equal pay even though we have been away looking after child

Silly women, making themselves pregnant.

Purplepinkpurple · 10/10/2018 08:21

nongender is talking crap about most of that, except he’s got half a point about female on male violence.

Certainly from my own direct and painful experience, the Police are completely disinterested in bringing charges. Even on the last occasion, where a knife was involved AND she assaulted the five officers it took to restrain her, the senior cop on the scene was bending over backwards to minimise. She wasn’t charged and I had to get and pay for a RO privately because they just weren’t interested in helping me.

I look at the sentencing for assaults using bottles or glass, stiletto heels or just plain old knives causing life changing injury. They’re laughable - the majority that get into the press end up with suspended sentences at worst. And these are not cases where home DV can, in any way, have influenced the offender - they’re straight up assaults, often under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

And if you listen to a number of “reforming” politicians, that’s exactly how it should look in the future. Their goal would be to end prisons for women except for a tiny proportion of out and out murder cases.

Justice is supposed to be blind.
