Just looking for inspiration really. Me and DH are getting a child free weekend in November and want to go ona weekend break somewhere for some much needed alone time. Would be really interested to hear what other people do/have done when they get time away from it all! We live about an hour north of London - would probably prefer not to go to London as we go there a lot. The last place we went was a spa weekend in bath which was lovely! Any recommendations would be appreciated Smile we’re willing to travel a few hours if needs be

Had a lovely stay at a boutique hotel in Brighton out of the main season. Wandered about looking in lovely shops. Sat for ages over meals and had cocktails in the evening! Bliss

Don't know how far you want to travel but York is beautiful. Having recently been there for the weekend, my advice would be to choose a hotel with a car park or get the train

We hired a camper van and did a bit of the Scottish highland with the dogs... it was utter bliss, the kids would have hated it Grin

We really liked Chester.

We go regularly to Stratford-upon-Avon. Amazing restaurants, shops and obviously theatre. Also nice tea rooms, market, river and the Shakespeare experience. I think there’s something for everyone.
We’ve visited in the high season and also in December. Lovely both times.

Scarlett hotel in Cornwall. Very special child free place. You can fly into Newquay from Stanstead if you prefer not to drive.

We did this last year and stayed in The Grand at York. Tempted by Brighton or Bath this year. Any hotel recommendations please?

Corfe castle, some stunning b&bs round there

greendale17 · 30/09/2018 20:03

The Cotswolds is really nice

We stayed in Hotel Una in Brighton. It was a bit pricey but the room had its own sauna, hot tub and a little private outside area. Staff were really lovely as were the cocktails and breakfast! It was a special occasion and was definitely worth it. Parking in Brighton is very expensive though and the hotel did not have its own unfortunately.

Edinburgh and Musselburgh races

DH and I just had a weekend away in Oxford. We stayed at the Randolph (very nice but a bit old school for me). We had a really lovely time with loads of walking and lots of eating!

HerLadySheep · 30/09/2018 20:24

Marlow is lovely if you are foodie's, fabulous places to eat and lovely little town to mooch around.

The Pigs in north Norfolk. www.thepigs.org.uk/

I could have just stayed in our room the whole time, quite happily. It was a few years ago now, but god it was amazing. Double sized bath with a telly at the end, separate ensuite with monsoon shower, sauna, steam room, private courtyard with woodburner (marshmallows provided), and the BEST food. Plus they had an honesty jar so you could help yourself to the wine in the guest corridor after the pub had closed.

I'd do a night at Woburn Center Parcs in a Spa suite.

You get access to the spa for the day before and after. A big suite with a 2 person bath etc.

A few treatments each.

We're planning it for our first child free break.

DrDreReturns · 04/10/2018 06:57

I can second Oxford. Had a great break sans kids there.

booboo24 · 04/10/2018 07:05

Oxford is lovely (but I'm biased!). Seriously though I live here and so have never really done the tourist 'stuff' until I started seeing my partner. Since I've been with him we've done lots, the museum's, Oxford Castle, punting on the river, the Harry Potter hot spots, ghost tours! etc. There's the college and university grounds, and the countryside is beautiful. There's also Blenheim Palace and you can visit Winston Churchill's grave too. I've lived here all my life but never appreciated it until I had to show someone else. There are hundreds of lovely pubs and restaurants, some in the countryside next to the rivers, some quirky old ones and lots of trendy bars too.

Having said that, my go to city break is York!

CrazySheepLady · 04/10/2018 07:14

Why not hop on the train to Edinburgh. Loads to see an do; maybe a walk round the old or new town's, visit the Castle and browse all the shops along the Royal Mile, a trip on the open top buses, visit the Royal Yacht Britannia. If you want to splash out, hubby tells me the Balmoral Hotel is fabulous.

CrazyDaisy2018 · 04/10/2018 07:22

Forest Holidays are lovely. We went for a romantic break. Log cabin with a hot tub. Very cosy and cuddly. You needn't go anywhere! Wink

AnythingConsidered · 04/10/2018 07:32

The Dart Hotel in Dartmouth was our most recent one. We had a balcony room.

Access to gorgeous coastal walks, a small town to mooch around, good pub food & restaurants, great places within driving distances etc, but we spent most of the weekend in our room(!) watching old movies from the hotel Dvd library, snoozing, lounging, wrapped up on the balcony - was bliss!

PeridotCricket · 04/10/2018 07:37

Edinburgh, great pubs, some lovely hotels. Very walkable city. Or Newcastle, tremendous fun and loads to see. Best break we’ve had in a while was Belfast.

anniehm · 04/10/2018 07:41

Buxton is lovely, great places to eat, to drink, amazing countryside for a walk (with pub lunch half way) and there's the opera house which has a wide variety of live entertainment (not just opera). In November they have their book weekend if you like literature - we normally go.
