Arguing all night and now he has smashed a plate on the floor and put a huge hole in the new carpet! I'm so mad 😡 not sure we can come back from this one...

OP - red flags all over the place here. Doesn't get on with your family. Is angry that you did something reasonable to YOUR OWN HOUSE. Smashed a plate with force and then ripped up the carpet. Ongoing arguments. A breakdown is no excuse. I've had a breakdown. I bet lots of people have! It doesn't inevitably lead to violence.

I really you're ok. 0808 2000 247 is the free 24-hour National Domestic Violence Helpline run in partnership between Women's Aid and Refuge.
You can get advice about what to do. You don't necessarily need to leave your home. Maybe he should leave the home?

He needs to take responsibility for his own emotional welfare - it's not for you to fix it. Help, sure, if he's also helping himself. But you aren't responsible for it.

Maybe check out the hashtag #maybehedoesn'thityou

Good luck.
