Mil put me downs

My mil is being nasty and I don't understand why. My friend's baby is demanding and wants constant attention and my babies are content. I mentioned that my friend asked me if my twins were content all the time and I said , yeah they just sit in their chairs and chill sometimes while I get on and do things.

My mil (talking to the twins) said - oh does mummy just make you watch telly and ignore you , does she? She puts me down. We watch telly sometimes but I have two and I think I'm doing a grand job.

She'll never say I'm doing a good job and is obsessed with over helping/wanting us to need her. She always tries to tell me that the next stage is going to be hell (and usually my husband and I can manage on our own). It's like she hates that we can manage on our own. She kindly offers to babysit once a week to give me a break and I am really grateful for it but I don't NEED it.

Just ignore her comments , those comments would piss me off too. Be grateful that you do have someone to babysit there may be a time when you do need it. Needing a break doesn’t make you a failure. And letting them watch tv in my opnion isn’t the worst thing in the world but I know a lot of other people would disagree I find it hard entertaining one baby all day never mind twins so sometimes tv is a good send for 20 minutes or so. Just try and ignore her Grin

She wants to feel needed. Is there a little job you could give her? Fil often went to baby swimming with mine. Having said that FIL would never make such comments. I think you and DH are going to have to address her comments. Why do you say that? How do you think that makes me feel? Is that helpful? Would ypu want to leave your dc with someone who made you feel like that? So why should I? We are perfectly capable adults. If we need help we will ask for it from someone we trust. Something like that.

Where is your DH whilst all this is going on?. Is he aware of this from his mother? How does he get along with his mother these days?.

I would be making myself and your children far less available to her going forward, she is not a nice person to be around. She does this because she can, its not out of wanting to be needed so do not give her any jobs to do. She just wants to throw her weight around and relies on you not to say anything back,

Yes, where is your DH when she's saying this. Does she ever criticise him for letting the kids watch TV?
