Double barrelling a child’s name

I’m divorcing my husband and would like to ideally change the children’s names to my maiden name - via my solicitor he has refused that request so where would I stand with adding my maiden name on to their current surname - ie double barrelling?
Do I need the fathers consent for this? Is it legally accepted as their name if I am able to double barrel it and does anyone have any advice or experience of a similar situation please? Children are 1 and 4...
Thank you so much

It isn't 'quite legal' when you know full well the other parent with whom you share parental responsibility doesn't agree that those are their names.

I agree with @MrsBertBibby i cannot believe people are suggesting you use a different surname for them at school and doctors but not change their name properly. These are children you are talking about. Not cats you've picked up at the shelter.

The school will not just change their name unless it has been done by court.

Imagine when they are older.. "why do you have a double barrelled name?"

"My mum and dad got divorced so mum changed it."

What a lovely reminder for them!!
