In a month. Only earns £300 a week according to HMRC. What can we do about Contractors? I know he earns £175k a year, but he is paid via the Bahamas. I’m lucky that I have a good job and don’t rely on this money, but there must be many people who do and something needs to be done

Nothing is done bc the majority of govt, regardless of party is Male & I bet many of them don’t pay full wack to their ex wives & mistresses for their own kids.

Maybe we could get a few of the female MP’s onside? (& any males if poss)

Can’t get how they can’t see what this costs the tax-payer in hard dosh, benefits claimed etc not to say the hidden costs of stress to the child’s family, work lost through depression/anxiety etc.

It should be one of the biggest scandals of our time but no politician is
interested, I challenge our MP every bloody time it comes to elections, none of them are interested or concerned.

If anyone wants to launch a campaign, count me in.

You can start with reporting him to HMRC. You can do it online. He might at least get a very hard time when his file is selected for an audit.

Not paying child maintenance or avoiding paying what ought to be paid is financial abuse of the mother or child neglect in my opinion.

Further to cawfee's suggestion, the change.org petitions are useful for advocacy and generating media attention, but the 100,000 signatures to be discussed in parliament is for a petition on the government petition site.

It's worth thinking carefully about who the petition is addressed to on change.org eg head or cms? Someone who actually has the power to make a change. And have clear policy change demands.

Likewise on the government site, need to be clear about what you are asking for and how that might happen.

If OP or others might be inclined to take campaigning on this further, I would advise that you find out who is already campaigning on this issue ( combined forces get further), or look into finding a government relations consultant or think tank who can advise on effective strategy.

I don't know about cms issues but am familiar with how to get policy changes implemented.
First step is to work out what you are asking for and how that would work, which is what you are doing here Grin

If you know he's paid via the Bahamas can you get the name of the umbrella company he's paid through? If so report that to HMRC - they're clamping down on these companies - I know contractors that have had whopping back dated tax bills as their company has closed and the full liability been deemed as due.

In regards to CMS maybe go via your MP to be referred to the FIU as hopefully that will help.

It is fraud, much worse than benefit fraud if you ask me.

These men should be in jail.

I don’t want this thread to be about me. I’m not looking for advice for a personal problem. How can we move forward towards having the law changed? Contractors may be self employed but once they sign a contract they are guaranteed an income. Surely this should be what CMS refers to rather than their tax return?
