advice about sectioned family member

my dad has been sectioned (first time) due to mental health issues, suspected bipolar. His behaviour over the last few years has been cycling between normal and increasingly erratic and at times endangering my mum, verbally and physically abusive, completely out of it.

she had to call the police due to concerns about her safety and he's been in a mental health unit a few days. they've drugged him up to the eyeballs with clonmazepam and having been to visit him she's in bits.

the place is like one flew over the cuckoos nest and he's low and depressed, the nurses are like big thugs and people wandering around like zombies.

we're worried and upset about him being in there and if he'll end up ok when he comes out. although his behaviour has been terrible we're very concerned about him.

Does anyone have any advice / similar experience at this difficult time? Either about the sectioning process or the medication or bipolar and how it goes after being sectioned / medicated? How we can help / get through it?

many thanks

I'm s mental health nurse although it's been some years since I've worked in in-patient care. Is he on an acute ward or PICU? I know it must feel really scary right now for all of you. Admissions now a days are kept short and on going support will be provided in the community via a Community Mental Health Team.

My partner was sectioned last year during a psychotic episode. It was a complete shock as he'd never shown any signs before. He became paranoid and eventually tried to end his life.

He was sectioned because he was a danger to himself. It was the best thing that could have happened. He was put on the right medication and has made a full recovery (with some lingering anxiety). The mental health unit was lovely though with great doctors and nurses. He was sectioned for 28 days but it was lifted after 2 or 3 weeks as he was doing so well.

I hope your dad gets the help he needs.
