Just a random question. How old were you when you met your best friend.
I'm 44 and haven't got anyone I would class as my best friend. Suppose I want to know if at my age it's possible to make a best friend or is it to late

OP posts:

My best friend and I started work the same day, we were both 15. She was a wonderful, loyal and kind person, and I was devastated when she died in her 50's. Felt so privileged to have had such a friend. Hope you find such a person in your life.

Binxee · 27/04/2018 18:37

My very best friend I’ve known since I was a child, we’ve grown up together and our families are friends.
I have a few other very good friends who I met mainly in my 20s through university, boyfriends etc.

LuckyLuckyWoman · 27/04/2018 18:39

My best and probably only friend when I was 29

madeyemoodysmum · 27/04/2018 18:42

I don't a have proper best friend anymore
I do have a handful of close friends I can talk too tho

I rather have more eggs in my basket as friends can move away or worse die leaving you lonely

Think I learnt that at primary when my best friend moved Never had only one friend since.

madeyemoodysmum · 27/04/2018 18:43

Age wise ive made them mostly in my 30s.

A few in twentys
And one at 40. We are very close now.

Only one from my teens is still in contact.

CharlotteCollinsneeLucas · 27/04/2018 19:05

I've had best friends in the past. People I really connected with, who were at the same stage of life as me, so we had a lot in common.

No best friend at the mo, but a couple of good friends. That's enough for me.

banannabreadforme · 27/04/2018 19:14

4 and 11. So primary school and high school. Bit boring 😂

ilovechocolates · 27/04/2018 19:17

5years ago when I was 37 but feels like I've known them forever

OnlyTheDepthVaries · 27/04/2018 19:19

We met at school when we were 7 but didn't become best friends until we were 11. We are now 51. I love her to bits!

tierraJ · 27/04/2018 19:20

I met 2 of my best friends at school aged 15; but another best friend in 2011 - we met at work.

There is another friend I was close to but we aren't so close now, I met her living in a shared flat.

I would also class my younger sister as one of my best mates.

WillyWasAWatchdog · 27/04/2018 19:41

I was hurt badly by my last two best friends at age 12 and 16. My only friend left from school used to bully me and although she's made up for it she lives the other side of the country and tbh I don't trust her completely as she often tells other people my secrets (apparently my life is entertaining to some people). Unfortunately I've not been able to bring myself to trust women enough since to be able to make any new 'best' friends but have made a few 'mum' friends through my daughters. My only true best friend now is my boyfriend, I can tell him anything and trust him completely.

gingergenius · 27/04/2018 19:42

My 2best friends both died!

tootiredtospeak · 27/04/2018 19:48

I dont have one im 41 never have really since school. I have work friends school mum friends and partners wives/girlfriend friends. But no best friend. People make you feel crap about it sometimes but it doesnt really detract from my life. That said both me and my partner have big families and were all very close so that doesnt leave much time for a lot else. If your ok with it I wouldnt let it bother you. But it sounds like it makes you feel a bit sad.

fcekinghell · 27/04/2018 19:48

my mother has had her best friend for over 60 years, they are like sisters. My dad's best friend died a few weeks ago after almost 60 years of friendship.

I've never really had a best friend though. I did at school but she dropped me like a hot potato when we went to different universities, so not really a best friend after all.

I have a few acquaintances, but I'd love a best friend like my parents have.

AmazingPostVoices · 27/04/2018 19:51

I have several best friends.

One from school
One I met through my husband
One I met in the baby years.

They are all awesome but don’t know each other as they all live in different places. They keep me sane though.

soggydigestive · 27/04/2018 19:52

ginger genius I'm sorry Flowers that must be so hard.

OP I don't have a best friend either. I don't know many people who do tbh. Maybe it depends on where you live?

Vitalogy · 27/04/2018 19:54

My ex was the one and only best friend I've ever had. We were 18 when we first met.

Flaskfan · 27/04/2018 19:57

Tried it once when I was 14, but found it too restrictive. I have various groups of friends and am closer to some at different t times. I'm quite self contained though.

FullMetalRabbit · 27/04/2018 19:57

I'm in my 50s, I've never had a best friend

as I've got older I've got less and less friends, mainly because when they treat me badly I get rid of them

I would like more friends

SoyDora · 27/04/2018 19:59

2, 14 and 18.

autumnboys · 27/04/2018 20:04

I was 17 months old - she is my sister. We both have other friends, other best friends even, but she is always there for me.

Apart from her, my most enduring friendship is someone I met at Uni & the only friend who remembers me before I met DH. I also have a good friend from NCT days & another kindred spirit from another aspect of life. Plus lots of people to meet for coffee etc. I do feel lonely sometimes, but really, I’m lucky.

autumnboys · 27/04/2018 20:06

Sorry, what I forgot to say was, my latest friend, I met when we were both in our late 30s. I absolutely don’t think that 44 is too old to make a really good & enduring friendship.

BennyTheBall · 27/04/2018 20:06

11 - when we started secondary school. I have a clutch of very close friends from various periods of my life, but one that I am especially close to.

I have sisters, but I am far, far closer to my bf. Love her. She is the first person I would turn to for advice, to share big news or sad news. We speak 4 or 5 times a week. I'd be lost without her and feel lucky to have her in my life.

myusernameisnotmyusername · 27/04/2018 20:06

I was 4 when I met my best friend and she's still my best friend 33 years later.

FurryDogMother · 27/04/2018 20:11

I've been friends with my best friend for over 30 years (she's in her 40s, I'm in my 50s) but she only became my 'best' friend in the past 5 years, since I've been caring for my aged father. Many people I thought were good friends have faded away once I was no longer able to go out and socialise, visit them at home, or go to restaurants. My best mate, on the other hand, is one of the few people who have put themselves out to visit when I'm stuck here 24/7- honestly, she's more like a sister than a friend now, and I truly value and love her, and feel privileged to have her in my life. I like to think it works both ways, and that I'm there for her when she needs me, too. I am so lucky to have her.
