What should we do?

This probably sounds ridiculous but i would be really grateful for your advice. My Father lives in supported accommodation - he’s not allowed his own washing machine has to use the communal one. We’ve just been told he can only use it once a week but due to illness he needs his clothing washed more than once (we probably use it two or three times at the moment). We have thought about explaining his health problems but are then worried that they will say he’s not well enough to live there and needs to leave (they are very strict, have a waiting list and frequently ask people to go). My father loves it there. I could do some washing at the weekend but don’t have a dryer so it won’t be done in time (I work Mon- Fri so see him at the weekend) and to be honest would rather not have to commit to spending every weekend washing and drying lots of washing (of course I will do it if it’s necessary). Does anyone know of any alternatives? Are there services that will come and do it or do you have any other thoughts about what we might be able to do? I’m sorry to ask but I just don’t know what to do ( I am already caring for him and working full time so am exhausted).

Is it an Abbeyfield?

I haven’t used them, but there are services that will come and pick up your dirty laundry, take it away (I’m guessing to a launderette) and bring it back. I’m in London so maybe they’re just in cities? Good luck!

WHo says he's only allowed to do one load of washing a week? How's he supposed to wash his bedding, towels, clothes and night clothes in one wash a week?

I'd be taking this up with management.

Buy him double the amount of clothes?

NC4Now · 09/04/2018 20:23

The laundrette over the road from me does service washes with a free pick up and drop off service. I take a few loads over when we get back off holiday to get it done quicker, and they seem to do quite a lot for people in sheltered accommodation.

We’re not in a big city btw. Small town, so worth asking around.

Get double the amount of underwear, vests and socks from somewhere inexpensive, like Primark. Same for bedding if that needs changing more than once a week. Cheaper than launderette collection services I imagine. I'm glad he is somewhere that he likes.

Thanks ever so much for the quick responses. He has a lot of clothes so Im not really worried about him running out just don't think its healthy to leave soiled clothes for more than a day? unfortunately the carers are really rubbish at hand washing/rinsing/leaving things to soak so its been easier to put them in the wash. Do you know if Launderette services in London are really expensive?
Thisianewbeginning-its not Abbeyfield but very similar.

Google ‘laundry pick up drop off’ and your dad’s postcode

I would be very surprised if he is not allowed a washing machine in his flat if there is room. It would have to state it clearly in his tenancy agreement. Check that first and if he wants his own washing machine then just install one. Also re only allowed to do it once a week in the communal laundry sounds like the warden /manager is on a bit of a power trip. Yes there are often rotas if the laundry room is heavily used but I doubt it needs to be restricted so severely. I would speak to the warden and make it clear you will be taking it up with the main office.
