My daughter was watching some beauty bloggers on my husband's computer and suddenly a pop-up as came up for over forties dating sites. Should I be worried?

Yes, you need to get a scriptblocker on your browser.

Heratnumber7 · 10/02/2018 21:39

No. My pc suggests all kind of weird things it thinks I might like.
Since I've turned 50 it's often stair lifts and incontinence pads. I've never googled either.

TheBrilliantMistake · 10/02/2018 21:41

No reason to alarmed and it does not mean he's been looking on dating sites.
However, depending on his browser configuration and emails etc, advertisers can know he's male and over 40 etc, and target him for those sort of adverts.
He may have clicked on something as innocuous as 'beautiful woman in scandal' click bait type advertising etc. There are literally thousands of adverts on the web aimed at figuring out that sort of things interest us. It is not beyond imagination that a man might sometimes be tempted to click a link with a slightly enticing image on it. It doesn't mean it's porn, it can be something like 'This lady had no idea why people were staring at her' (it's DESIGNED to make you intrigued and click it'.

Basically, don't worry. It's normal.

If its youtube i've been redirected to all sorts of sites that i've not looked at webchats etc. Ive been charged £4.50 for some game site while i had my phone in my pocket listening to music. I also get thousands of emails about russian brides, dating sites etc. I wouldn't read to much into it.

Cuban8 · 10/02/2018 22:02

No, this, in itself, should not make you suspicious

Chippyway · 11/02/2018 00:11

If this popped up on my partners screen never in a million years would I suspect anything Confused

What’s making you so suspicious? I sometimes see adverts for a Muslim dating site. I’m not Muslim nor do I ever go on any dating sites.

Worrynot1 · 11/02/2018 11:21

I would be more concerned that there was nothing, there is a hidden file index.dat that records every site if its empty then there has been a concuss effort to cover tracks if there is a program called CC Cleaner then they know how to cover tracks. A few pop us is usually related to cookies I get Muslim dating ones for no apparent reason.

lilypoppet · 11/02/2018 14:02

Thank you I guess I'm just paranoid :(

I had similar pop up on mine... I was suspicious and watched myself carefully for a month or so.

It never happened again Smile

I don't think we can ever know what a weird algorithm will choose to pop up for us!

TheBrilliantMistake · 11/02/2018 14:34

there is a hidden file index.dat

This is quite old information. Index.dat is no longer used (it was used until and including Internet Explorer 9).
It is only true of people using Internet Explorer (awful browser btw).

I'm currently being spammed to fuck by randoms trying to get me to buy a drone.

Nope, never googled/bought/searched drones.

If it's not that it's cures for tinnitus.

Presumably these are in anticipation of the hearing issues caused by my shiny new drone when I finally crack and buy one.

I've got lots of Arabian beauties hoping to meet me.

They are going to be somewhat disappointed if they do.

ginch · 11/02/2018 15:20

You OK, OP?

cod · 11/02/2018 15:53

CCcleaner isn't a suspicious thing in itself, I use it now and again when my PC is running slowly to get rid of any rogue files. I have absolutely nothing to hide and no one to hide it from.

TheBrilliantMistake · 11/02/2018 20:33

I dare not use an ad-blocker, I might be missing out on all those lovely ladies in my area just waiting for me!

midnightmisssuki · 11/02/2018 21:57

mine keeps telling me there are russian women who have already private messaged me....they cant wait to see me apparently, i have never been more in demand than i am now! Grin
