Dating and Valentines day

Hi all.

If you are dating or early doors in a relationship, what are you planning to do for Valentine's? Or are you avoiding it altogether?

I've been dating/seeing someone since the end of November, and I'm not sure what the etiquette is!

Thanks

It's getting on for a few months so you know them fairly well and should know if a small or grand gesture would be appreciated, or indeed nothing but a card.

I've been seeing someone for a similar amount of time - I'll be doing the old flowers thing because I'm a soppy romantic Blush

What do you even buy a bloke for Valentine's?? I'm so crap at this.

I think I'd prefer to just go for a nice meal than physically buy anything..

I bought my DH a small gift box and filled it with sweets - he sent me flowers. We keep it very low key.

Thanks Merry.

I've been a single parent for the last 7 years so this is all new territory.. I feel like a 17 year old again! Grin

Hmm.

It’s a tricky one...unlike birthdays where it’s a given that some kind of effort should be made, some people (male or female) genuinely couldn’t give less of a shite about Valentine’s Day. So it may be worth subtly trying to scope this out a bit with him.

At the very least I’d say get a card. If you did want to get a present, maybe some tickets for a show/concert you’d both enjoy, or a night in a nice hotel somewhere you’d both like to visit? Or a cheaper option would be some kind of sex related thing from love honey...depends what your relationship is like really...

OhShit2017 · 16/01/2018 19:13

Oh, thinking about it my bf (who I’ve been seeing about the same amount of time as you have yours) is taking me out for a meal on Valentine’s Day at a really nice restaurant. He wasn’t supposed to tell me that but he’s not very good at keeping secrets.

Kinunir · 16/01/2018 19:19

Everyone's different but I know the small gift box filled with sweets would go straight to my... heart, as would any other gift that was personalised in any way.

MidnightTrain1 · 16/01/2018 19:19

Yep it's tricky.

I'm firmly in the 'don't give a shit' camp.. but years of singledom might be to blame for that.. also got swept off on a mega romantic valentines weekend by someone I was dating a few years ago then dumped the day after we got back Blush so slightly wary of grand gestures.

Gig tickets or a night away would be perfect but his birthday is also coming up so they are my ideas for that too. Hmm.

I think I'll casually mention it this weekend and scope him out.

He hasn't bought me anything present wise so far, but he is generous when it comes to paying for meals/drinks/taxis etc so he's not tight but maybe not into romantic gifts either..

Although he does turn up at mine with my favourite snacks etc if we are staying in.. so maybe he is.. gahh.

There is zero point dating someone you can't talk to! So just talk to him.

I met my fiancé in Oct. Late Jan, I said "VD coming up, what's your take on it?". He said "20 happy years of marriage to without it - neither us were bothered". Me: "good, I don't like it either - so we're not doing it, and neither of us has to second guess what the other thinks - OK?"

Sorted!

MidnightTrain1 · 16/01/2018 23:11

Of course we talk. We just haven't talked about Valentine's yet.

I just wanted others opinions as we've only been dating a short while and I'm a bit out of the loop Smile

I'm newly seeing someone since mid December. I imagine we'll spend Valentines day evening together. At the moment my plan is to just get him a card and write something nice in it. If he asked, I was going to tell him to just do the same. I guess we'll talk about it a bit nearer the time. :)

Myheartbelongsto · 17/01/2018 00:14

Did he buy you a gift for Christmas?

Blessed81 · 17/01/2018 00:50

Been dating someone since August but being a full time single dad to twins, we haven't been able to spend time together as much as we thought we would. We haven't discussed VD, not sure I will get him anything.

MidnightTrain1 · 17/01/2018 08:03

Thanks.

No we didn't do Christmas gifts, we went out boxing day together instead (which was technically only the 3rd date!)

We are both single parents so the run up to Christmas was hectic, but we've spent a lot more time together in the Christmas break and since.

I'm going to suggest a meal on the Saturday after. DD has a club on Wednesday so my actual Valentine's will be spent sat in the car park Grin
