Trouble making conversation?

This may sound silly, but here goes... I have been with my bf for nearly 5 years now and he's always been a quiet type. However the longer the relationship goes on the quieter he gets. Don't get me wrong our relationship is great - we have fun together and want the same things in life. It just drives me wild that he literally won't say ANYTHING unless I initiate the conversation, and when I do I feel like I am talking to a wall. He just sits there silently, sometimes even reaching for his phone instead of participating. We sit in silence for most of our relationship and I am feeling increasingly lonely. Has anyone else had experience with this? What did you do that worked?

My dh listens to music. I read books. Can be hours between speaking to each other. Works for us because we both like it that way.
But if your bf just doing nothing and not engaging at all and this making you unhappy, then i guess a real conversation about the issue is needed. You may be incompatible unfortunately.

I ended a relationship because the conversation wasn’t good enough. I find it surprising that you say you have a great relationship with somebody who doesn’t want to talk to you.

I dated someone who was very quiet. At first I thought they were just shy and would come out of themselves but it never happened. I'm sure some people would be happy with that but it didn't work for me so I stopped seeing him.

I suppose you need to have a conversation and see if he's happy with how things are. If he is then that's just how he is and you need to decide if you can live with that. I couldn't.
