Was just checking in to see how OP was doing on this original thread and it's been taken down. A troll? Daily Fail? Or....?

OP posts:

Message from MNHQ: Thanks for your reports. We've had a closer look at the OP and there's one or two things we'd like to check out. We're taking this thread down in the mean time.

There have been quite a few with similar notes over the last few days. I assume the same thing happened to the thread about the sensitive disclosure from the nephew? That one disappeared whilst my phone battery was dead!

Alexandrite · 26/12/2017 05:35

One on Relationships about a dp walking out on xmas eve had the same message.

WhatALoadOfOldBollocks · 26/12/2017 10:02

I really wish MNHQ would stop deleting threads, it's really putting me off the place! All they have to do is add a note that things might not be quite what they seem and let posters decide whether to engage further. Same with deleting posts.

Angelf1sh · 26/12/2017 10:16

I can understand deleting the occasional objectively offensive post, but whole threads does seem unreasonable.

Um, no, the thread would then fill with people taking the piss or being nasty to the op. And the occasional person who hasn't rtft getting sucked in.

Deleting suspect threads is the best of a bad job.

WhatALoadOfOldBollocks · 26/12/2017 14:29

But Category, what does it matter if those things happen? People chose to post. If they dont like how a thread is going they can easily hide it, or log off of MN can't they.

category12 · 26/12/2017 14:45

It matters because of the type of forum atmosphere it creates: the kind of behaviour that is tolerated on some websites isn't tolerated here. MN isn't perfect by any means but I prefer its moderation style to other places. It makes a big difference. If you allow threads to run, it easily falls into nastiness that doesn't stay confined to single threads. Saying "just log off if you don't like it" is what drives nicer people off social media while the ones who get off on being vile take over.

Angelf1sh · 26/12/2017 14:52

But none of the threads deleted recently had anything nasty on them and even if they weren’t true, it would have been helpful for people who genuinely were in that position but didn’t feel able to post. I agree it’s a difficult line to tow, but I think there’s value in keeping threads up unless they are turning nasty.

category12 · 26/12/2017 14:58

I think if threads like that are left up with a note on them from MN that they're suss, they will quickly turn nasty and the reason you don't see it happen like that, is because MN delete threads Grin. Moderation is tricky. There are seldom threads so original in their problems that someone couldn't find the support or advice therein elsewhere. And to create a (more) supportive atmosphere, moderation is absolutely necessary. Cos people are arseholes.

Angelf1sh · 27/12/2017 08:30

The way to resolve this is to keep the thread but stop people from commenting on. It. That way the advice stays, everybody gets to see the Mumsnet post (....not just those who happened to be on at the time) and it cannot turn nasty.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 27/12/2017 12:01

But none of the threads deleted recently had anything nasty on them and even if they weren’t true, it would have been helpful for people who genuinely were in that position but didn’t feel able to post True. But there has been a noticeable increase in fairly non combative posts being deleted recently. Maybe someone is having a nice time reporting them! Maybe HQ has info we don't. But it has been happening more than feels usual!

WhatALoadOfOldBollocks · 27/12/2017 14:40

Good idea Anglef1sh. Stopping the ability to add new posts yet keep threads up seems the ideal option.
