No More Mumsnet for Me

I'm disgusted that the Daily Mail did an article about one of the threads in relationships yesterday. I'd been commenting quite a bit in the thread and the OP must be so upset. It looks like the thread has been deleted now. I'll not be posting on MN anymore. Ive found MN to be such a useful resource and form of support. My anonymity is so important as I'm sure it is for most. Thanks to everyone that has taken the time to give support and advice.

OP posts:

yeah that was absolutely shocking, although from now reading around I see Daily Mail make a habit of it. I'm not a regular poster so it doesn't really affect me but I still think it's ridiculous that a newspaper would just lift an entire thread like that and not censor usernames. Poor show and the poor op, like she wasn't going through enough turmoil. Wankers.

pollythedolly · 23/12/2017 11:06

Which thread was this?

Thinkingofausername1 · 23/12/2017 11:11

Omg what thread was it? Yes it's called 'lazy journalism' they can't get off their arses these days, not even for our local paper. Always asking on social media for people's pictures etc from events. Angry

monicabling · 23/12/2017 12:53

it was the work wife thread :/

I worded my post wrong about it "not affecting me" sounds rude. I meant I'm a lurker/namechanger - so pretty anonymous. It must be unsettling if you're a regular poster and have friendships here etc... to discover the DM have posted your bloody username like that and people can rifle through your posts. That's what I meant. Gosh I need more coffee.

HerrHerrHerr · 23/12/2017 13:01

If anonymity is important then posting on Mumsnet, an extremely popular open forum is probably not for you. If you are posting about something you’d worry about people reading and recognising it’s just as likely people will find it on Mumsnet than the Mail. Mumsnet is always high on google searches and threads are regularly shared on Facebook and Twitter.

YuleBeSorryInTheMorning · 23/12/2017 13:13

Mumsnet is a PUBLIC forum. This means everything you put on here is in the public domain and as such can be freely shared, quoted, reported upon and copied. It is in the terms and conditions of the website when you sign up.

Yes it's lazy journalism but people read it so they do it. The Daily Mail, The Sun, The Huffington Post, Ladbible, BuzzFeed, even the guardian have all lifted stories from mumsnet just in the last 6 months.

Mostly they pull threads that have sparked debate and they tend to pull from chat, AIBU and relationships.

TheNaze73 · 23/12/2017 13:40

The Daily Mail aren’t doing anything wrong.

WhatALoadOfOldBollocks · 23/12/2017 18:33

I don't understand why people get upset when their threads feature elsewhere online. This is a pubic forum, and you should only share on here what you're comfortable for the whole world to read. Lazy journalism is irritating, but what difference does it make if it ends up on another website?

jaimelannistersgoldenhand · 23/12/2017 18:36

Daily Mail aren't the only company doing this so I'd post super sensitive stuff on a smaller forum.

StealthPolarBear · 23/12/2017 18:39

In fairness the topic titles suggest they are for things that people would prefer to be kept private. Very few people would want a meaningful post in 'relationships' or 'general health' to be public. I know they are but what else would you post in those?

maxthemartian · 23/12/2017 18:41

The Daily Mail aren’t doing anything wrong.

They are not doing anything illegal but it's unethical and shitty, lazy journalism.

KittyHugs · 23/12/2017 18:44

I thought it was the 'baby it's cold outside' thread where the poster said she didn't want to sing the song because it was rapey.
Lazy journalism on the dm part they do tend to do this a lot though.

Lallypopstick · 23/12/2017 19:01

This is a pubic forum

AIUI they also take threads promoted to them by MN. I'd be happy to be corrected but I thought threads were promoted to the press as part of publicity for the site. I'd rather they were not considering the slant the likes of DM often put on them.

Whilst MN is a public site, the expanded audience brought by the tabloids isn't always a helpful audience and must increase the likelihood of user identification.

If that were true, what difference would it make?

YuleBeSorryInTheMorning · 28/12/2017 03:28

Forum posts are publicised on social media via Mums-net official pages. Often threads are lifted from here and then press lift from each other as well. Mumsnet don't directly push things to the press unless it's something like a campaign, webchat etc.

The press also lift threads from Reddit in the same way.

MrsDilber · 28/12/2017 03:41

Yes, it was crap thing for them to do.

MorningstarMoon · 28/12/2017 05:01

Don't understand why people need to announce they are leaving. If you don't want to post just leave. Absolutely don't need a thread about it.

ravenmum · 28/12/2017 10:14

I don't understand why this would put your anonymity at risk more than the original post. Surely anyone posting here knows that their relatives or friends might well be reading and recognise situations? You either take that into account or avoid discussing the matter online altogether.

I liked Mumsnet on Facebook, so can see and share popular threads there. I first got into Mumsnet after the "penis beaker" debate was al over social media and the news. It's not a private forum.

hellsbellsmelons · 28/12/2017 12:14

They do it all the time.
They are lazy fuckwits and they never actually write about real 'news'
This shouldn't be a shock to you if you've been on here a while.
Everyone hates the Daily FAIL!!!!

TheNaze73 · 28/12/2017 12:31

Everyone hates the Daily FAIL!!!!

So much so, that it has the second largest circulation of any newspaper in the UK & more than ten times the readership of the Guardian.

Personally it’s not for me but, saying everyone hates it, is a bit disingenuous

Lefty1 · 28/12/2017 12:41

@thenaze73

You sound almost protective there...Hmm

hellsbellsmelons · 28/12/2017 13:19

OK then, most people on MN hate it!
