Hi all

me and DH need the above to talk things through, try to work things out.

But how to go about it? how do you know you've picked a good one? How longs the wait? How much is it and how often?

Any comments welcome, but trying to be positive. x

www.counselling-directory.org.uk

You can find someone close by on this website, there are much fewer couples therapists than ones who just do individuals

You can really only tell if they’re suitable for you by going to an appointment. It can cost anything from £40 to £400 - watch for the ones that do short sessions as they look cheap but they’re not

And there’s Relate if you have one close by. Apologies I read your post from the perspective of private therapy.

Thanks will take a look. It's just not something I guess people leave reviews for...... Am I right in thinking realate usually has long waits though? Thanks again

There is usually a wait with Relate. However you can email therapists on the counselling directory and as they manage their own diaries I imagine they’re pretty quick getting back to people.

Some of them also say when they have availability on their profiles. So they might say they have good availability at weekends for example.

Also look carefully at how long you get for your money. I’ve seen Relate sites where they offer 45 minutes for £80. I think that usually couples sessions are longer (as they require fewer sessions than in individual therapy) so I’d be inclined to look for people who do greater than 60 minute sessions.

There is a waiting list. I volunteer with this organisation and all the counsellors have specialist relationship training.

I was personally really unimpressed with Relate.
The organisation linked has a strong religious ethos. Which might or might not suit you but definitely something to be aware of.
It is difficult to wade through long lists of local counsellors but you can get info and a feel for them from their website/profiles.
Maybe check out if you have any local therapy clinics. You might get some reasurance that way about quality control and qualifications of practitioners.
Good luck.
