"Doesn't take life too seriously" - online dating

Anyone care to deconstruct this phrase for me?

Its quite a common self-descriptor by men on online dating - usually the more attractive ones with otherwise OK profiles. But there's something odd about it. I feel there is a little red flag waving there somewhere, but its quite an innocuous phrase ... but still ...

A person who doesn't take life TOO seriously is a more pleasant person to be around if things are not going entirely to plan.

A person who doesn't take life seriously ENOUGH is another thing altogether.

ThisMeans · 30/10/2017 14:30

It also sounds strangely flat and passionless ...

It makes them sound dull, imho. You can gauge how easy going someone is once you start chatting and arranging to meet.

sweetpotatosteak · 30/10/2017 15:59

The hilarious thing about profiles containing this phrase, in my opinion, is that they are usually accompanied by a series of photos of the man in question looking extremely serious in a number of different poses and locations.

qazxc · 30/10/2017 16:40

I shall be a cocklodger.

qazxc · 30/10/2017 16:41

And any complaint will be because you are too uptight/ take things to seriously.

Tuileries · 30/10/2017 16:43

This is ridiculous. I have written this on dating profiles and would describe myself as somebody who doesn't take life too seriously. For me it means I don't enjoy drama and don't worry too much about the small stuff. I am definitely not a cocklodger or a timewaster. It's sad that anybody would make such assumptions based on a throwaway line.

Mookatron · 30/10/2017 16:56

Well ok Tuileries you can act on the fact or not really, it's up to you isn't it? I would've thought this thread useful information myself. Why not say you're not about drama or worrying about the small stuff instead?

Holdtightdontletgo · 30/10/2017 16:59

It's not a phrase I feel I have come across a lot particularly on online dating. There are many more cliches than that one imo.

Tuileries · 30/10/2017 17:01

Why not say you're not about drama or worrying about the small stuff instead?

Because I didn't realise saying that I don't take life too seriously would provoke such a strong response Confused

Holdtightdontletgo · 30/10/2017 17:14

I think a lot of profiles are made up of 'throwaway lines', meaningless statements and plain untruths.

I have just seen a profile on pof from my ex with a picture of him grinning like a Cheshire cat and the headline, Happy chap seeks woman....

Omg happy chap? He was an angry possessive and jealous little man.

My other ex has taken 5 years off his age and added two inches to his height Confused. I'm not sure you can believe a word of the average profile.

Tuileries · 30/10/2017 17:15

Eek, holdtight

MrsTerryPratchett · 30/10/2017 19:37

'I don't enjoy drama' means 'I attract drama wherever I go and assume that it is other people'. IME undramatic people don't attract drama so never have to use this phrase.

bathghter · 30/10/2017 20:06

it’s an immediate deal breaker for me. along with “looking for my partner in crime”, and any trite hyperbole e.g “exploring” “adventures”.

only a brainless fuckwit would think “doesn’t...seriously” was a statement worth typing out. it’s just nonsense, he’s not bright enough for reproduction.

WhatALoadOfOldBollocks · 31/10/2017 11:26

If someone says they don't want a serious relationship, fair enough
Ah yes, but don't forget there are plenty of men out there who think if they told the truth and said they only wanted casual sex no woman would touch them with a barge pole. So they will say they want a relationship and write some nondescript bollocks in their profile

They're trying to come across all go with the flow and happy go lucky. But I see it as a massive red flag saying that they're immature and afraid of deep emotions/difficult conversations and any time you bring up something that's in any way emotionally challenging they'll tell you to take a chill pill.
I'm afraid my cynical side agrees. Many parts of life are serious, there's no getting away from it. That's not to say people can't also have fun, but the serious stuff needs to be...well...taken seriously

The hilarious thing about profiles containing this phrase, in my opinion, is that they are usually accompanied by a series of photos of the man in question looking extremely serious in a number of different poses and locations.
Exactly like so many who say "I have a good sense of humour", yet have a souless profile and a face like thunder in all their photos Grin
