Money issues and close friendships

Our closest family friends try really hard to keep up with us. It's never planned and we rarely ever talk about it, but it has been awkward a couple of times. We're stereotypically middle class. I shop at Waitrose, drive a land rover, have a cleaner, designer bags, etc. My salary on its own is more than they make together as a couple. We're going on a fantastic holiday in a few weeks and they've been honest that their budget is close to zero. We definitely don't want to subsidize them, but we all want to have a good time. Any advice on this? I'm mostly worried because it was fairly awkward last weekend :(

You're coming across like a twat

Not sure others will agreed but this is what us "not so middle class" folk do...
Have a kitty, all throw in say £100 each and use that for drinks and meals for the weekend. Doesnt have to be big flash meals everyday surely? Take it in turns to decide where you eat, have a sandwich or even a picnic.

Buy some bottles of wine from a local supermarket and enjoy your "friends" company - worth more than gold itself friendship :)

Jesus! Your closest family friends you say? You clearly know there situation and you went ahead and booked a holiday with them.

They're not your children. They pay for there own way. I suspect most would be happy to shout there friends a decent meal. Otherwise you eat at cheaper places and enjoy there company.

You sound like a snob tbh.

Why don't they go as your slaves. They could fan you and peel grapes whilst watching you have a great time being middle class.

HoHoHoHo · 29/06/2017 14:13

Either subsidise them or do cheaper things. Or, if you don't like them enough to do either of those things ditch them.

WhooooAmI24601 · 29/06/2017 14:15

Find better, richer friends. Then you'll be the poor ones!

WhooooAmI24601 · 29/06/2017 14:16

Joking aside I doubt your friends give a shit what you earn. You clearly do, though, so you're unlikely to keep those friends for long. Win-win.
