Hello all,

My partner and I decided to split up. It was kind of a joint thing.

However I'm starting to worry as I'm 34 and wanted children? I had an idea of having children in my early thirties! I suppose that was my idea life however now that's not going to happen!

What does everyone else think about having children later in life?

My best friend had her baby at 39.
Another friend has just had a baby and she's 40.
You have plenty of time.
People are leaving it later than they ever used to.

I had my first at 33 after trying for two years. I just had my last at 42, who was conceived the moment I finished my last pill. Often we're terrified of the stories we're told about decreased fertility, but I think it's often exaggerated. You really don't need to worry about missing your chance for a lot of years yet.

It's not so much the stories about decreased fertility I'm just worried about being an "older" dad. What perception there isn't of that. How old I will live to. Will my son/daughter be with out a parent when they need one the most etc...

Interestingly today chatting to a friend she said 'I always wanted all my children before I was 40, but had my second one at 41, funny how we set these milestones for ourselves isn't it?' Your post reminded me of that... setting milestones, why do we do it?'!! Many of my friends have happily had babies early 40's.

I was 44 when my daughter came along. Also have a son and I was 30 then. The way I look at it is that they both give me a reason to live, I plan on being their dad and being part of their life for a long long time.

Life is to short to worry about these things. I was 40 when I lost my dad......on that basis I need to keep going until I'm just over 80. I'm up for that challenge

Oh.....I forgot to add. I love being an older dad. I'm much more content with who I am and, yes, I may be one of the older ones at the school gates but I don't feel it

I suppose I could meet someone in a few weeks and be very happy and she could become pregnant?

I hear of a lot of people having children later in life. I don't know why it bothers me so much.
