You get what you pay for the good ones are expensive. If you can sort it out between you do that instead and just fill out the forms yourself

lilli30101968 · 11/12/2016 19:43

where do i get the forms ?

You can download the forms.

Can you give a rough idea of where you live?

Montane50 · 11/12/2016 20:00

You can complete the forms yourself and it costs approx £550, if you have no financial commitments or children this may be an option. However if you have slight complications re finances either partner can chase the other years after a divorce if you didn't get a finance order signed prior to the divorce. First 30 mins of legal advice is free so i strongly advise you talk to a sol then decide if its false economy doing it yourself

i live in London cary2012

You can still do it all ypurselves if you're in agreement. My experience is solicitors inflame the whole situation

Montane50 · 11/12/2016 21:02

Its totally up to you, my best friend rented but her and exh had no money so she did it herself, it was straightforward and quick. My dp then downloaded the forms, but thought a free chat with a sol wouldn't harm. Him and stbxw rented and have no dcs, so thats straightforward however when he retires he'll get a lump sum, to protect that he needs a finace order to be signed, to get a fo signed both parties need legal advice...stbxw cant afford that, so he'd have to pay for her fighting him!!

If you need a lawyer (and I'd strongly suggest at least an initial consultation to work out your entitlements and where any negotiated settlements should end up) please don't think you have to use an expensive lawyer.

If you don't have unusual aspects like a multimillionaire husband or assets abroad then any solicitor who is a family specialist (and ideally, though not essentially, a member of Resolution - the collaborative law approach) will do the job. They don't need to be near you in these days of Skype, Facetime, email and telephone.

Choose a low cost area where chargeout rates are equally low. I'd suggest Lincolnshire, Doncaster or Rotherham but am sure there are lots of others. Choose your lawyer by location from this Law Society list of family law specialists.

You get what you pay for. The more experienced the solicitor, the more they cost.

That said, juniors are supervised by seniors so you might get lucky for cheap. Otherwise DIY is the way forward!

Montane50 · 11/12/2016 21:54

Please ignore any advice that tells you solicitors inflame a divorce. Ive found they tell you your options which they are obliged to do, its then upto you if you take it (i found talking to my exh and agreeing what we wanted prior to the sol visit meant that when i was advised i could negotiate a better settlement i said no, itd cost more than id gain, please stick to what we've agreed). Divorces make people greedy, and theres usually one winner

sanityisamyth · 11/12/2016 21:57

I would get a solicitor - the best one you can afford. I'm just coming to the end of mine and it has been complicated and messy (ExH inheriting £180000 and trying to make me and DS homeless after stealing £56000 in cash and taking out loans and credit cards in my name, then leaving me to pay them off and defaulting on one whilst I was trying to sort it out).

I think my legal fees are in the region of £15000 (yes, 15 thousand pounds) but I wouldn't have got the settlement I have without my solicitor.

Good luck!

Its a bit confused I dont want to spend a lot I dont earn enought he is not a millionaire we dont have any assets just a morgage together for the past 17 years. I have ask him to leave and think what he wants to do but I can see him leaving . what about mediation NFM ?

In my experience your best bet is to sit down between the two of you, come to an agreement then go straight to a solicitor to draw that up as fast as humanly possible. It goes downhill very quickly and anything agreed in writing or not counts for nothing until you get to court. The actual divorce forms are really straight forward do that yourself then the solicitor has to turn what you've agreed into a consent order, nail that quickly.

HELLO CARY2012 IS TO DOWNLOAD THE FORMS IS THAT QUICKIE DIVORCE FOR £67

OP posts:
Newbrummie · 13/12/2016 12:00

But you can download the forms for free 🤔

Allthebestnamesareused · 13/12/2016 12:03

If you have a mortgage you have a property and that is an asset! I also assume your husband has a pension - that too is an asset.

Definitely see a solicitor and then decide whether to try to do it yourself.
If it is a divorce based on behaviour I doubt it will go smoothly!

Montane50 · 13/12/2016 21:52

The forms you download are free (government website), but to file them at court costs the exact same amount wether you do it yourself or via a solicitor. The solicitor will then charge extra for the advice/work they do on your behalf-basically it will cost at least £550 no matter what.

BogwashBarry · 13/12/2016 22:09

It's true you get what you pay for. I had a one-off initial meeting with a top-drawer lawyer who gave me invaluable advice how to put myself in a better position. From where I then used a regular lawyer to proceed the divorce.

lilli30101968 · 14/12/2016 10:50

Thank you guys I will dowload the form from government website
