Why is the thought of our parents having sex so awful, even though we're in our 30's?

I mean it's not like we're giggly childish teenagers.

A friend was telling me how her parents spent the weekend with her recently. Her father had been working away a lot and they were obviously looking forward to seeing one another at their daughters house .
They disappeared upstairs on the first night and she could hear all this giggling, then her mother came downstairs in an little nightie and asked if she had a spare condom ... "You know I haven't seen your father for a few weeks darling". My friend was aghast and I was in stitches when she told me. God knows why she wanted a condom, she must be in her early 60's .

Don't think it's awful at all. Lovely really.
Then again I'm not in my 30s

Very funny thread Especially Mrs Apron's friend's slurping GP's - PMSL

I know I should be mature about my parents having sex, but I just can't be. My mum and dad are seperated but still spend weekends together. It's just cringey and creepy to think that they are doing anything other than saying goodnight and retiring to seperate bedrooms at bedtime.

It's scarey though to think that WE are going to be the object of our childrens disgust in not so many years time.

OrmIrian · 13/02/2007 07:52

slurping!!!! Oh no no no...... I don't think we've ever slurped in our lives!!!!! Perhaps they were eating ice-cream???

I overheard my parents when I was 13ish. I hated it and TBH it upset me for ages. I used to make sure I went to bed by 9 so that I'd be asleep by the time they got to bed . Not helped by the fact that my mum used to go for a bath afterwards and never wore a dressing gown or anything else. For ages I mistrusted any sign of affection between them. I don't know why it bothered me so much but it did.

They're 76 this year and I think that it's probably safe to sleep in the same house now

Stiller, we are already objects of digust re sex to our 14 y/old.. but I sincerely hope that IF he has heard us, it hasn't freaked him out like it did OrmIrian (not she SHE has heard US shagging.. oh YKWIM! )

KathyMCMLXXII · 13/02/2007 17:39

Condom might have been to slow things down, if your friend's father tends to come too fast (TMI yet? )

I haven't been grossed out by the thought of my parents doing it for years, not since I left home. I think it's v v sweet.
I was home the Xmas vacation after my first term and was staying up very late doing some reading for uni, and my mum came downstairs in a dressing gown with a big grin on her face.... I am 99% sure what they had been up to.

OrmIrian · 13/02/2007 17:39

shiny - how loud are you for goodness sake!!! I don't think I've heard you.....

Booboobedoo · 13/02/2007 17:50

We are not loud! But the bed makes that noise!! You'd think someone would have made quiet beds by now wouldn't you! If they did, and marketed them as such, I'm sure they'd make a packet!

"Do you have children over the age of ten?? Then come to our show room and bounce on our Shag Proof Bed!! Stop grossing out your kids and spare yourselves those blushes! We can promise you the quietest shag you've ever had, as long as you can stop yourselves yelling YES YESSS YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS! we can't claim to help with that!"

OrmIrian, I'm the same - I overheard them when I was 12 and it really upset me for some reason.
They were screaming and shouting whilst we were staying in a little holiday cottage - god knows WTF they were thinking, the idiots .

Anyway, for the next 5 years I always slept with ear plugs (after hearing the same kind of extremely noisy sex on a couple more occasions) and fabricated illnesses and nightmares on holiday if I had to be in a room next to them, to really disturb everyone's night.

They're quite uptight about sex really and never spoke to me about it, it was probably a bad combination all-round.

ShinyHappyPeopleSharingKisses · 13/02/2007 19:09

Oh Fio.. you barge onto threads where I mention sex and make me feel like a sex mad pervert!!! You're the one who's accidentally knocked up are you not? I rest my case!

ShinyHappyPeopleSharingKisses · 13/02/2007 19:11

(And I'm lucky to get any in bed, let alone anywhere "creative" like the floor or a chair.. he has a back issue dontcha know!)

sandyballs · 14/02/2007 12:14

SLURPING!! OMG . I've got such a gross image in my head that I just can't shake off .

I never heard my parents at it, but my mum (who is nearly 80), still says she misses sex (my Dad died about 20 years ago).

ok, what about this one...when I was about 8 or 9yrs old we went on a family camping trip. We had one of those big tents with 'bedrooms'. I was in my bedroom meant to be asleep and my parents were sitting outside the tent by lamplight having a beer. I woke up to see the silohette of my dad going down on my mum!!! OMG!!! I had no idea at the time what they were doing other than I shouldn't be watching it....several years later the image came back to me and am now totally horrified at it - argh!!

Have also heard my dad making 'grr' tiger noises at my mum in the middle of the day - followed by giggling and then silence (urgh - snogging!)

My MIL told me and my SIL one Sunday afternoon over tea and scones that FIL 'doesn't like to wear condoms because he finds them uncomfortable' - me and my SIL nearly died - why on earth would we need information like that??

love this thread - is making me laugh and cringe at same time...

ellceeell · 15/02/2007 19:25

I overheard ds (age 18 then) telling dd1 (15) - "they were at it again last night!"
When I realised what they were talking about I couldn't go in the room because I was laughing too much
