my mum sends one to my daughter

jalopy · 05/02/2007 22:12

The world's gone mad.

sauce · 05/02/2007 22:16

I'm giving them each a little heart-shaped tin of lindt choc balls.

I promise not to eat them after they've gone to bed

Twinklemegan · 05/02/2007 22:23

Commercial nonsense IMO.

sauce · 05/02/2007 22:35

yeah. like Christmas.

ScummyMummy · 05/02/2007 22:38

lol sauce!
Valentines day goes back eons, I think. wikipedia says oldest surviving valentines card is from 1415.

bubblymummy · 05/02/2007 22:39

My mum always gave me a card. Lovely idea

Twinklemegan · 05/02/2007 22:40

Aren't they meant to be sent between people who don't know they love each other though?

sauce · 05/02/2007 22:44

Celebrating Christ's birth is great but who needs the rest of it. My MIL & I are still "not speaking" because of certain stupid, nonsensical issues around the dinner table. Anyway. Whatever.

Two years ago I bought some of the hand made paper and made three scrolls, one for each child, stuck normal paper onto the hand made stuff and wrote a list on each.. "10 things we love about you..." then the list, signed by both DH and I. Rolled the scrolls up with red heart confetti in them, and tied them with red ribbons.

The kids loved them

I got the idea from one of Mimi Doe's Spiritual Parenting books. Some of her stuff makes me throw the book at the wall because I can't be that good.. but other ideas I have embraced!

Why would I? Because I love them. And they will be able to look at those scrolls again when they are adults.. or whenever.

oxocube · 06/02/2007 13:19

Aww, thats a lovely idea Shiny and steers away from the commercial aspect of V's Day. Think I might do this actually (if I can think up 10 things - might have to narrow it down to 5 )

Fimbo · 06/02/2007 13:24

My dd would love that Shiny, great idea!

My parents send Valentines to my dd and ds. My dd thinks its great, ds will open his and throw it on the ground no doubt.

wotzsaname · 06/02/2007 13:32

Home made carrds are lovely.

My dad died when i was young and one of the nicest things I have is a scrape book full of birthday cards from my family. Cards from my 1st Birthday to my 5th Birthday.

I love to look at my dads hand writing and read the lovely messages he sent to me.

I have done the same for my dds to keep and from time to time we look at them. I will give their books to them when they are older.

So please, those that think bought shop cards are a commercial waste of resources, please note that the ones I have kept are my treasures.

my dd gets a postcard every week from my brother, last year she got a card from him and my dad(who never sent me one), I like the postcards, not sure aout the valentine card....

strangefruit · 06/02/2007 13:39

I will make heart shaped sandwiches for her lunch box

MoreTeaVicar · 07/02/2007 09:30

Absolutely, they are the love of my life. They are signed from both of us to say how much we love them. Although probably get told that dozens of times a day anyway.

Paddlechick666 · 07/02/2007 09:51

nope.

i don't get this tbh, it's Valentine's Day which is for lovers/couples/secret admirers.

personally i think it's weird and just another over-commercialisation especially if you can get cards saying Happy Valentine Granddaughter or Daughter or Son etc.

Next it'll be Happy Child cards that parents send on Mother's or Father's Day!!!

re: what someone said about having the cards their dad sent them, I think that is lovely. My dad died when I was young too and I have got a box of birthday cards, postcards, xmas cards etc that he sent. have also kept a bunch of ones from my Nana too.

I am keeping a lot of DD's cards from special people when she was born, Xmas, birthday etc for her when she gets older.

But there won't be any Valentines cards there.......... ever or at least not until she's in her late 40s when I may allow her to wear makeup and go out alone!!!

I always make a "We love you" card for dd cos she loves all that and she always makes one for dh. Haven't really bothered with ds yet though (he's 3) but may need to this year. Don't actually put them in the post - we just leave them by their breakfast bowls in the morning. Usually buy a little pack of heart chocs (or this year have found some heart shaped lollies) for them too

dmo · 07/02/2007 10:48

my parents sent me one every year but i have never sent them to my boys
every year they have a valentine disco at school and my boys take a single rose for a girl each
boys are now 9 and 10 (nearly 10 and 11) and the 11yr old has 4-5 girls every night come to call for him to play out so he might get a few cards without one from me
