Suspicious Phone no/ phone technical question

PhoneNumberQuestion · 13/08/2016 21:07

I've name changed for this.. If this isn't the right thread please direct me elsewhere.

Can someone tell me if this is possible and if so how you do it (other than by an operator patching you through):

Person A (abroad) calls Person B (in the UK).
Person's B Caller ID shows Person A's number as a UK land line [Company X].

I completely get that if A calls company X and asks them topatch through/ connect to Person be it would show as Company X.

But assuming this wasn't done (call was on a weekend when Company X is closed), is this possible in some way? Can you dial into a mail box or something? Can you yourself route a call via Company X's line from your line abroad? How do you do this - so that the caller ID shows up as Company X and not your own foreign number?

Or is the bottom line that Person A while claiming to be abroad was in fact in the UK?

Any technical wizards able to help here?

I've never used the service myself but there are companies that will provide a personal dedicated VOIP line for you, whereby the number called and from which they call, will look and be charged as a UK landline number.

So in answer to your question, yes it's possible. Why are you suspicious and would proving that this person lied, be worth the effort and headspace.

OP you are being a bit vague and it is probably stopping people from helping you.

Is person A someone you are in a relationship with? Do they have form for lying or are you suspicious for some other reason?

Are they still "abroad" now? If so, I would call the hotel they were supposed to be staying in and claim you "couldn't get through" using their mobile if they are there and query it. Or call the mobile and see if you get the international tone.

If they are home now, you have missed your chance and will need to find another way to see if your suspicions are justified.

FWIW.. You can do most anything these days with what's called IP telephony more commonly known as VoIP ( Voice Over Internet Protocol)
This is where voice audio is converted to internet "packets" and can be sent anywhere from one PC to another etc voice packets are much the same as data, video, mumsnet messages whatever!.

You can if you really want, be based in wagga-wagga in the middle of nowhere in Australia Timbuktu even and have a London number matters not anything can be anywhere and CLI (Caller Line Identification) can be altered as you might like.

So if you want to have your main number elsewhere then you can do that a simple number extension system also exists all over the net. This site explains and shows more.

Blush

OK. I bit the bullet called Person A and spoke to them. The ring tone was indeed abroad and they answered. We spoke. Definitely Person A. And definitely abroad.

I have an app on my phone which logs me in to my work phone. I can call from anywhere as long as I have an Internet connection and it will show as my works number.
