I went for a run and wish I hadn't

Me and DH are on a diet. We have both agreed we need to shed some pounds and it's been two weeks. He's lost weight and I haven't. I know I need to exercise and so I announced to him this morning "I'm going for a run". He sniggered.
I am not a runner - at all.
Well because of the snigger, I pushed myself hard and completed 2.5k - this is amazing for me and I was really chuffed.
When he came home I told him, he smirked and said "that's only half a mile" (it's not its 1.5 miles ish), he looked at the tracker map thing on the app I'd downloaded then he just moved the conversation on.
I am so crest fallen that he didn't say well done 😢.
Yes I'm after a bit of attention....shamelessly! And to declare, my husband's a twat!!!

Well done, OP, you are fab. I have mild mobility problems, chronic pain and asthma, so don't run at all... but am so tempted to join in an Aquathlon that my kids are doing in 7 weeks. I was going to start Couch to 5K (one of the six week ones) but had talked myself out of it. And after reading your thread, I've decided to have a go after all. So thanks for that! And ignore your DH - he's just jealous.

Was1969 · 25/07/2016 20:37

Ignore him. Well done, you should be proud of yourself Flowers

JontyDoggle37 · 25/07/2016 20:38

I apologise, I haven't read every post, but wanted to say don't just rely on your weight masurement. As you're running you'll be toning up, so take all your body measurements NOW, then once a week. And then swan past your husband and say 'oh I've lost four inches off my body this week, how are YOU doing?'Grin but seriously, some weeks you might get not lose weight but will lose inches so it really helps to keep you motivated. Keep going!

Hissy · 25/07/2016 20:41

I'm so impressed by all of you! My knees didn't like me running, but that was due to muscle wastage from 3 years stuck indoors in Egypt. I swim at least twice a week now, and to get distance up, it's really hard! Perhaps I'll be fit enough to give it another go pounding the streets...

WetPaint4 · 25/07/2016 20:42

I will take that advice Jonty, I am not happy with my weight fluctuations at the moment but I have noticed my clothes are looser, there's more boob room in the old bra etc. Might keep me more motivated Smile

Liiinoo · 25/07/2016 20:58

I am so impressed (and jealous) of you achieving 2.5k in just two weeks. Keep it up Flowers

PacificDogwod · 25/07/2016 21:21

In the words of Dory: just keep swimming running Grin

Glad this thread is helping.

Personally, I'd ignore weight altogether - who cares?!
Do a waist measurement and repeat it from time to time (not daily Wink) and the way your clothes hang better will tell you the rest.

chipmonkey · 25/07/2016 21:28

Well done! You are fantastic!

And LTB !

Vvlgari · 25/07/2016 21:33

That's really good to start with, well done! I did the same thing when I started running, short distances and alternating run and walk. I'm the slowest runner ever, but I just plodded along and got better in a surprisingly short time.

JellyBellyKelly · 25/07/2016 21:44

Sorry?? You ran 1.5 miles in 2 weeks?? I'm now a runner, but it took me 8 weeks to get to running 1.5 miles.

That is amazing.

And your husband is a cunt (I NEVER use that word).

Joysmum · 25/07/2016 22:55

Couch to 5k is amazing. I actually went from thinking I'd die on the first run, to actually running for over an hour in week 7!

Keep a it and you'll be there in no time Wink

I'm really excited about starting again now Blush

DrMorbius · 26/07/2016 10:39

Well done Latetotheparty26 you did fantastic. Welcome to the club (people who exercise) the club is open to all and we are all equal.

I am 50 and I have ran, swam, cycled, used gyms all my life. One thing is always the same. People who exercise have respect for others that put in the effort to exercise. It doesn't matter if you run 1km, or 26 miles. Someone is always going to be faster, stronger etc, but that's just life. We are all on the same journey, we are just at different places.

I often see large people come to the gym, (usually for the first time) and you can see their trapidation / embarrassment, I guess because they think the "fit people" are looking down on them. When in fact it's quite the opposite, the "fit people" will have nothing but huge respect for someone stepping out of their comfort zone to take the trouble to exercise.

Once again, well done Op, keep it up.

"the "fit people" will have nothing but huge respect for someone stepping out of their comfort zone to take the trouble to exercise."

Great words Dr Morbius

SecondMrsAshwell · 26/07/2016 13:28

One of my friends is a SERIOUS walker, I mean he's done 100k twice. So, if anyone is entitled to snigger at me, its him. Does he? Does he bolleaux. He always supports me when I say I've done a 5k walk. So, as someone says upthread, keep it up and then ask him to join you for a run to see how far he gets.

Thefitfatty · 26/07/2016 13:29

Ignore him! He's just jealous. 2.5k is a great achievement, and it will only get easier. Grin

Wafflenose · 26/07/2016 22:37

I thought I would come back to update, because the OP inspired me after I had second thoughts. I went out for my first 'run' today - doing a 6-week couch to 5k, although I have 7 weeks to get there, so will insert my own plan halfway through (week 4 looks too hard). I had to walk for 1 minute, run for 1 minute and repeat until I'd done that 10 times, so 20 minutes. Well, I couldn't do it. Actually, I DID do it, but I think I almost died. It's really not for me! But I measured the distance (using Google Maps) when I got home, and it was 2.4km! Beyond slow, I know, but maybe that will encourage me enough to try again. Thanks, OP!!

MilicentKing · 26/07/2016 22:48

He'll never be a runner.
I am, and in a club and race etc and you simply do not see this stupid lack of support whether you are a lamppost to lamppost beginner or the woman who got 3rd in her age category in the London marathon.

We all celebrate everyone's achievements however big or small and there is no sexism at all. Friendly competitiveness for sure, but all in good humour.

You carry on getting fit and start hanging out with people who will support you. You see improvements very quickly with running, just build up slowly and listen to your body.
