Husbands fear of water

We've been trying to book a holiday for the past few weeks but it's made difficult because DH has an extreme fear of water so won't go anywhere that has a pool or near a beach which is basically what me and the kids want. We have tried to compromise by choosing somewhere with a nearby water park but he complains about that too and I'm starting to resent him narrowing our choices down so much.

Is there are way to cure him of this fear? it effects his personal hygiene and health and everything, I have tried to be patient but after 3 years of him not getting a bath or a shower (he just wipes himself down with wipes) and constantly becoming ill through dehydration and now the lack of holiday help it's reallt starting to make me cross. He won't agree to any kind of help.

He won't do anything about this unless he has to.

So you have to decide if you're willing to live with it.

Personally I wouldn't be, I'd find it absolutely revolting.

Has he ever tried to get help for his phobia?

It must have been something quite traumatic
to be that extreme

aDad · 24/01/2007 14:17

I'm having a lot of trouble believing this is for real.

If it is - you say he "wont agree to any kind of help". I'm sorry but he really would need professional medical help for extreme phobia. So the first step is to make sure he does agree to get help.

really nitan??

Bozza · 24/01/2007 14:21

From the title I didn't realise that this was the extent of it. I thought he was more like DH who can't swim, is very reluctant to go in a pool, but can occasionally (once a year ish?) be persuaded for the sake of the kids, but will happily stand at the side with their towels and showers daily.

Has he had a traumatic episode in the past? I really think he needs some help. Will he not even drink liquids?

WigWamBam · 24/01/2007 14:21

I'm having problems believing this is for real as well. Huge apologies if I'm wrong, but we seem to be having a spate of first-time posters on the Relationships board whose partners have extreme problems like this.

If you're for real then you have to make him get help - the least of your worries is the fact he won't go on holiday. This is affecting him and you on a day to day basis, and you need to insist that he sees someone.

Oh my ... no bath or shower for three years.

I'd be more worried about this than the holiday.

Why doesn't he just stay at home.

jalopy · 24/01/2007 14:38
