gizmodo.com/almost-none-of-the-women-in-the-ashley-madison-database-1725558944

Someone went through the data and it looks as though the vast, vast majority of female profiles were fake. Very interesting read.

Looking, but not being able to take the next step because there aren't any women on the website.

Someone on Reddit said that you paid $$$ to buy the ability to send e.g. 50 messages to women. Then when your messages start to run out because there aren't any real women, someone paid by AM would reply and start flirting. The guy would then pay $$$ for more messages so he could continue the conversation, the woman would go cold, and it would start again.

kittykarate · 27/08/2015 10:37

There is a lawsuit saying that some women were paid to create and maintain fake profiles to keep it looking like there were more women up for it.

I think in a lot of cases men cheat because they can but a lot of women cheat for a reason IME.

Wando · 27/08/2015 10:43

Kitty karate - very interesting

Apparently lots paid to have their data deleted as well - and it wasn't deleted. That should run them into all sorts of data protection laws.

For the geeky, there's an interesting analysis of the hack here. For those folks who may have an interest in such things ....

suzannefollowmyvan · 27/08/2015 10:53

you can imagine lots of men looking but not feeling able to take the next step
It's not a case of he could quite bring himself to actually cheat

rather that, despite spending hours online messaging he couldn't find a partner in crime

Had one offered he'd be the proverbial rat up a drainpipe?

Wando · 27/08/2015 11:14

Not sure Suzanne - it would be a mixture of those who couldn't and those who wound jump at half the chance!

LurkingHusband · 27/08/2015 11:17

That should run them into all sorts of data protection laws.

Well, Canadian data protection laws ...

PreemptiveSalvageEngineer · 27/08/2015 11:23

I read the article, and just laughed and laughed..

AnyFucker · 27/08/2015 11:53

I so hope this is true Grin

That is hilarious Grin

Was Ashley Madison only a US thing, or were there UK users too?

Based in Canada, with (allegedly) a worldwide clientèle.

Wando · 27/08/2015 12:36

Supposedly several thousand UK "customers"

PageStillNotFound404 · 27/08/2015 12:46

The difference in the stats is very stark. It may well say a lot about why men and women seek sex.

Or possibly more about how they seek sex.

noblegiraffe · 27/08/2015 13:01

The company Avid Life that own AM also own Established Men (a sugar daddy site) and Cougar Life. The hackers threatened to release their hacked data unless Avid shut down AM and Established Men, but not Cougar Life.

I wonder if that's because they knew that Cougar Life was completely empty.

LurkingHusband · 27/08/2015 13:18

Incidentally, is it just me being a blokey type, or is this article slightly skewed ? ... the discussion of "Amy" is sympathetic in the extreme

Skiptonlass · 27/08/2015 13:34

No it's not just you. 'Amy' signed up to a site to explore the possibility of having an affair. She's a bit of a shit...

OP posts:
LikeIcan · 27/08/2015 13:36

I feel a bit sorry for the members of that site actually. They joined a site specifically for a reason, in this case to have an affair, at least they were honest about it. Plenty of married men on other sites ( like plenty of fish ) pretending they're single when they're not. No one knows the background story of every single member or why some of these people ended up on Ashley Maddison, I'm sure the majority were very unhappy people.
So yes, I feel a bit sorry for them, because I strongly believe that most people who have affairs ( male & female ) are unhappy. But of course all the people happy at all the 'outings' are perfect. Hmm
( people in glass houses & all that )

AnyFucker · 27/08/2015 13:41

I agree, LH, "Amy" is a cheat like all the others. No excuses.Shock

AnyFucker · 27/08/2015 13:41

I agree, LH, "Amy" is a cheat like all the others. No excuses.

Whatevva · 27/08/2015 13:51

It is interesting that there were rumours in April about this company floating on the London stock markets, rather than N America. They would have made quite a bit of money

That this company was not doing the business it claimed and also breaking data protection laws so it was all marketing and no substance. It is a bit like the pyramid selling - they have to keep signing new people up. So it would have collapsed at some point Hmm.

noblegiraffe · 27/08/2015 14:29

I don't believe Amy is a real person. Given the data, what are the chances of not only finding a real woman who signed up to AM, but one who was looking for another woman and found one and was willing to talk to the media?

Wando · 27/08/2015 22:14

I agree Amy looks like a fake to me
