Just wanted others thoughts on this. Bit of background info. We are going on a family holiday. There are dh and me (both 30), mil and fil and dh 2 brothers (27 & 23) and sil. My mil text my dh to ask if his youngest brother (23 year old)could pick his bedroom first.
We couldnt give a what bedroom we have but thought her text was pathetic and petty beyond belief. There are far more important things in life to worry about. Just wondered what others thought.

What a coincidence, that's exactly what I think of your post.

GrumpleMe · 28/05/2015 11:37

You're right - far more important things to worry about. So don't give it another thought. Smile

Whiteshirt · 28/05/2015 11:38

I think the holiday is probably doomed from the outset if this is already coming up. Any indication of why the 23 year old is getting his mammy to ask whether he can have special dibs on the bedrooms?

Fudgeface123 · 28/05/2015 11:38

Bit harsh pocket!

Surely when you get to the accommodation, you'd pick your room based on needs i.e. a couple would need more space, wardrobe space than a single, will kids be in with you if any.

Bit weird that your MIL sent that text yes, why should he get priority?

OliviaBenson · 28/05/2015 11:43

I think this is out of order- you could end up in a single room while your bil has a double?

I'd be responding back to mil why this is coming up now and how silly it all is.

Is bil babied at home at all?

BolshierAyraStark · 28/05/2015 11:49

Oh dear, I'd take this as a bad warning on how this holiday is going to pan out, I'd most likely then cancel.

thecolourpink · 28/05/2015 11:51

Thanks for all the replies. Dh & I might end up in a twin bed room if it comes to it but we aren't fussed about that. Bil does still live at home yes and is probably pandered to cos he's the youngest and the last of her babies still at home!

IMO it's not a holiday if you take the whole/extended family with you. Unless you are getting it free there must be better ways to spend your money...

AnyFucker · 28/05/2015 12:39

Have you been on a family holiday like this before ?

Please come back and update us how it went evil

ItsRainingInBaltimore · 28/05/2015 12:41

This holiday will be shit. Are you mad?

Unless there is a specific need for one person or couple, ie, can't manage stairs, can't climb into a bath so needs a shower cubicle, needs space for a travel cot or whatever, then this is what should happen:

The person who paid more than the others gets first choice.

The person who did the donkey work re: research, booking, paying the deposit and arranging gets first choice

Everyone else gets to pick out of a hat.

goddessofsmallthings · 28/05/2015 12:41

Babies sleep beside their parents or they and their cots are put in the smallest bedrooms Smile

Is this villa/apartment accomodation or is your mil expecting the golden child to have his pick of hotel rooms? How many bedrooms will be available for the infant to inspect prior to making his choice while you're longing to get your shoes off and ditch your travel togs after what may have been a long/tiring journey?

Depending on what is known to be available, I'd be responding along the lines of 'that'll be fine providing he doesn't pick the only (or one of the 2/3) en suite* or hog one of the rooms that has a double bed - otherwise he may find himself summarily evicted and kipping on a sunbed for the duration' with, of course, a Smile to indicate deadly serious only joking.

If this your first time away with the ils en masse you're best advised to start as you mean to go on, honey, otherwise it'll become mighty mildly irritating to have to sit back until Baby has had first dibs at anything/everything on offer.

*if there's only 1 en suite courtesy dictates mil/fil get first refusal - if they don't want it, it gets offered to the next eldest of the group and so on in descending order of age.

GoatsDoRoam · 28/05/2015 12:47

I would think it's a sign of a fucked-up family dynamic, and let them crack on but give family engagements a wide berth from now on, save for the obligatory ones like Xmas and important bdays.

Are you sure this is a holiday, and not an enforced exercise in Playing Happy Families?

thecolourpink · 28/05/2015 12:55

Its a 5 bedroom lodge with 3 twin rooms and 2 doubles all ensuite I believe. Youngest bil is also bringing his gf who lives with him at mil and fil house.

We have all been on holiday before in similar accommodation and this was never an issue so we can't understand mil request!

Goatsdoroam

Yes dh and I have agreed no more family holidays Smile

He wants the one furthest away from you all so you can't hear sex noises.

goddessofsmallthings · 28/05/2015 13:30

2 doubles? That's good news for you. Mil/fil get one and you/dh get the other but, sadly, not quite so good for bil27/sil.

When you went away with the ils before was baby bil's gf in the party? If not, she could be the cause of the request - in which case be aware that she may be intent on being top bitch dog in the dil stakes.

If you're taking your car or travelling with bil 27 and his dw, you could get there before the others, install yourselves in the room(s) of your choice, and be on hand with a freshly brewed pot of tea for mil/fil while baby bil selects one of the remaining rooms - the odds are that one of them will be to his/her liking.

Out of curiousity, is this challenge holiday taking place in the UK and how long will it last, pre-supposing you stay the course?

bjrce · 28/05/2015 13:36

He's a spoilt little fucker 23!, Ignore and take the best bedroom just to piss them off!

Such people have such a cheek to even make such a request.

Good luck on the holiday.

GloriousGoosebumps · 28/05/2015 13:42

Although all the rooms have an ensuite, is there one particular room which is more desirable than the others i.e. double the size, better view, patio doors rather than windows?

thecolourpink · 28/05/2015 13:55

I think mil and fil will have a twin room as that's the set up they have at home. Fortunately its only mon- Fri. Rooms are all fairly similar in views, size etc.

Families can be so weird. Who would have thought at 23 that bil would even give a stuff!!
