Is it just new-speak for 'bossy'? Or does it mean a lot more and what?

Thanks.

I think it's more than just bossy, it means getting inside your head and running every aspect of your life, down to who you see, what you say, what you wear. Someone best to be avoided at all costs if you ask me

WhizzBangCaligula · 01/11/2006 21:28

Depends on the context. Who is it about?

controlfreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaky2 · 01/11/2006 21:29

bossy and ...... controlling! i speak as one who is (see my name)

lulumama · 01/11/2006 21:30

controlling....implies gradually eroding another's free choice...cutting them off from family & friends and dictating what they do....keeping them like a puppet...

not a good person to be with......whittle down your self esteem until you feel you are nothing without them...

sounds quite scary!

Someone said my DH has always been controlling in his relationships and I am quite shocked that someone sees him as this.

Very dominating, controls everything you do and say

Beadgirl · 01/11/2006 21:31

He certainly isn't like this!

Maybe they meant bossy??

Thank you - you have put my mind at rest. I know that he isn't as you have described.

I guess it can be perceived to be treating him like a child, commenting on his friends, family etc. e.g. if you say I don't like Fred, cause he treats his girlfriend badly and is always out drinking. Some men would say 'you are trying to control who I am friends with etc., it doesn't mean that I am like that etc.

CURSEOFTHElazyMUMMY · 01/11/2006 21:47

Sounds like a bit of a throwaway comment on the part of your friend by which I mean she was saying the words without really thinking about them. I'm sure she wouldn't have chosen that turn of phrase if she thought it meant all of the things that have been posted here - which by the way would all be accurate if the original comment had been part of a psychiatric diagnosis or something. DO you know what I mean, am I just rambling?

lulumama · 01/11/2006 21:57

you know him better than anyone.if he is bossy, fine!! the word does have negative connotations , i'm sure she didnl;t mean any harm...
