to think DB should not be liable for council tax

DB is an athlete - training with a view to getting into the GB squad - he doesn't get any funding or payment and does not work. Just trains and trains and trains.

He is about to move back to live with our DM who works and gets the 25% council tax reduction.

AIBU to think he won't be liable for council tax.

Why is this in relationships? Confused

My elderly father in law worked all his life and a paid taxes, retired on a very small personal pension, parented 3 lovely children who work and pay taxes. He paid full council tax for him and MIL, with no additional benefits.

Tell me again what it is your brother is contributing to society?

Silver birch most training athletes do not work. Some are sponsored and some are supported by a charity. Its a charity dds school has just raised money for. I think athletes are important to this country. Instills a sense of prude and community watching one of our win a medal.

Is this for real? My FIL served in the Royal Navy during WW2 on the North Atlantic convoys why should he have paid council tax whilst a fit healthy young man is unwilling to pay his way and just indulge his hobby.

Next you'll be telling me sportspeople and TV personalities should receive OBEs and Knighthoods. Grin

Has he applied for lottery funding. My BIL was funded by lottery money for many years. You only get it if you are a realistic hope for a future Olympic, World, European or Commonwealth medalist though - depending on what events are coming up. (BIL is a Commonwealth medalist but had his funding cut off in 2010 as his sport was not expected to win any Olympic medals.)

I have very mixed feelings about sports people.
I really don't care about Olympic medals and being the best in the world at running the fastest etc.
It's a bit 'so what'.

I think the Olympics were better years ago when it was still a hobby for most of the competitors.

The saddest bit is when the successful sports persons write their autobiographies and many seem to have MH issues, ie self harming and attempted suicides. I'm think of Kelly Holmes and Jonny wilkinson.

I fail to see the point of their achievements.

So yes, of course your DB shouldn't get free council tax.

Complete non sequitur there, paxtecum Hmm

Why on earth this is in Relationships is indeed a mystery, other than that one's brother and mother are relations I suppose! Actually the place for it to be is in a letter to the Council asking about exemption. Anyone here can give an opinion, but only the body that assesses eligibility can tell you the facts.
