Can my husband cash a cheque in my name?

I got a tax rebate in cheque form last week. I put it in my handbag to deposit next day and it's disappeared. I do have a two year old who likes to root in my handbag, but he wouldn't have moved it far and should have been easy to find if my toddler had it.

My husband is in a lot of debt. I always wear a baby G watch as I like to cover a scar on my forearm. About a month ago my watch went missing. I bought a new one and two days later that went missing too. I'm pretty sure he pawned both of them as the boxes they came in mysteriously disappeared too. I can't find them anywhere. But the old broken valueless watch I have hasn't been touched.

Anyway, now this cheque has gone too, it went out of my bag before I left for work the next day. I supect he has stolen it. We don't have a joint account, would he have been able to cash it if it was in my name?

Don't need to, I believe you. The OP asked if her DH could cash a cheque in her name. Obviously he isn't supposed to, but that's not to say it cannot happen. Banks have their rules and guidelines but it does not mean that every member of banking staff follows these rules to the letter, every single transaction, unfortunately.

You can only cash a cheque that is your own cheque anyway, not one that was given to you, to get back to the original question. You can pay it into the account (therefore it would appear in his bank statement) but you would have to wait for it to clear.

Out of curiosity how do cheque cashing places cash a cheque that is made out to the customers name?

Seabright · 02/10/2014 19:31

I've always wondered that, it doen't make sense to me.

My understanding is that they go on reliability of who the cheque is from (chances of cheque bouncing).

Sorry I didn't mean that I meant if I can't cash a cheque in somebody else's name how can a cheque. Cashing place? On a serious note op are you absolutely sure your partner does not have some kind of addiction ? I lived with an addict for five years this is exactly the sort of behaviour that would make me suspivious cheques going missing etc its unbelievable the lengths people go to , to hide and feed an addiction.
