lending dilemma

a friend is having a minor nightmare over what to wear at a wedding. It occured to me that I had a couple of things she might want to borrow, so I called her and asked if she would like to. In the course of this conversation she remembered a third thing I have, which she really likes. To put it bluntly I don;t really want to lend it to her. It's a gorgeous dress, it's very distinctive, and if anything happened to it it couldn't be replaced as I bought it a couple of years ago - and have never seen anything at all like it. friend is a little inclined to drink too much and I would really worry about the dress. because I'm a wuss I said yes, but I've just got it out and realised that I really meant no. shall I just pray that she tries it on and doesn't like it? (doubtful cos it's the most amzingly flattering dress I've ever owned) or do I wriggle out of it?

Just tell her you went to fetch it out for her and cannot find it anywhere...

nice idea californifamousfanjo - but I'm going to the same wedding. I just wonder if it's mean of me to only offer her the things I don't actually like that much anymore. I also know that all our friends will know it's mine, as they've seen me wear it, which personally, I find a bit odd as well. god don;t know what to do.

tell her on second thoughts, you'd like to wear it since it's the dress that fits you the best at the moment. but she's welcome to the others. don't let her wear it!

thewomanwhothoughtshewasahat · 20/09/2006 19:22

so it's not mean to retract the offer?

OP posts:
wartywarthog · 20/09/2006 19:32

well, yes it is... if it were me, i'd just tell her the truth. say you feel really bad about it, but it's your favourite, you can't replace it and you really wanted to wear it yourself.

thewomanwhothoughtshewasahat · 20/09/2006 20:12

yep - I agree - I'll tell her the truth - but I still wonder if it's mean.

Tell her the truth. Letting her wear it, now that's being mean - To you!
