Need witnesses for secret wedding

We are getting married in a few months and we don't want anybody to know about it! Blush (please, no comments about whether or not this is a good idea).

The problem is we need two witnesses to be there in the registry office, to make it official. Is there anyone in a similar position who would like to do a "witness swap" ? We would be witnesses for you, and you would be witnesses for us.

The reason we want to do it this way is so we can be absolutely sure of some reliable witnesses who don't know us - the wedding is stressful enough without this added worry.

Ideas that we've considered and rejected for various valid reasons:

  • Asking the registrar to provide witnesses
  • Picking someone off the street on the day
  • Paying someone, e.g. photographer or make-up artist
  • Friends who are sworn to secrecy
  • Colleagues

Are you having a secret wedding too? Do you want to swap witnesses duties with us?

MN has supplied witnesses more than once :)

I'm not far from Reading, PM me with the date and I'll let you know if DP & I can do it for you

WildBillfemale · 08/07/2014 20:58

Too far for me - I would have offered otherwise.
Have a great day! Smile

CookieDee · 08/07/2014 21:22

Thank you so much all of you! I knew the mumsnet crowd would be the ones to come to our rescue :)

It's going to be in October, fairly straightforward - it'll just be the both of us with our baby, and whoever amongst you is able to join us...

I'll PM you our dates prime minister, lady in radiator, curioushorse, and others, and we can exchange contact details if the dates suit. Perhaps we can meet up once before so you know we are not dodgy lol and we can explain our reasons..

FayeKorgasm · 08/07/2014 21:57

I'm not far from Reading and I have plenty of free time, so I could help. I am married, so don't need a reciprocal arrangement, but I am very reliable and I have champagne!

I love a wedding.

OvertiredandConfused · 09/07/2014 00:09

I'm also Reading and would love to help if the dates work

Darn it, I want to be a witness at a secret wedding near me!!

Congratulations OP, I hope it all goes well for you and you have very happy lives together Smile Flowers

PoppyAmex · 09/07/2014 14:06

Congratulations, OP.

DH and I eloped to an island and got married on the beach, but when we returned to Sydney we had to make it "official" so we left work at lunchtime and just grabbed two random people at the registry to serve as witnesses. We gave them 50 bucks when we were done so they could have a beer and now we have two random aboriginal names in our wedding certificate.

CookieDee · 09/07/2014 21:52

Thank you ladies! We are going to hand in our notice to marry next week. Really excited :)

Oooh, I love a Wedding / Witness thread.

TheCunkOfPhilomena · 10/07/2014 20:05

Oooh, fantastic thread! I hope you have a lovely day and it goes exactly as you want it.

My DB called me yesterday to tell me he'd just got married to his long term gf, no one knew beforehand and I thought it was just brilliant! Marriages are more than just a wedding Thanks

MummyBeerest · 10/07/2014 20:17

Not even on the same continent, but that sounds awesome. Congratulations OP, what a cool idea!

SignYourName · 11/07/2014 04:32

Hope you have a great day with your MN witnesses, please tell us all about it afterwards!

We once had a temp at work who asked if she could take a long lunch one day...when she came back in the afternoon I asked if she'd had a nice lunch and she said "yes thanks, just been and got married". That's style!

iamjustlurking · 11/07/2014 11:51

I'm in Reading too if you need another option.

How exciting, there's so many of us or is it worrying that we all home in on the relationship board Grin

OvertiredandConfused · 10/10/2014 20:43
