Thinking of trying online dating either Guardian Soulmates or My Single Friend if you have tried either of these sites what were your experiences?

TIA

Hi Zara

I personally would not bother with My Single Friend. There are very few men on there and those that are, some have not been "active" for a very long time. It is misleading, gives the impression that more are available when they are not. I tried it out and I found not many bothered to reply (probably as they were not actually active) and there was not a lot of men to make a selection from.

Guardian Soulmates is fine, not had any problems with that and at least the ones they say they are "active" actually are.

Guardian Soulmates tends to be - like many sites - great if you live in a big city, rubbish if you don't. I seem to remember it was particularly good if you lived in the North.

MSF total and utter rubbish.

I'm on that Soulmates, had three dates so far. Seems alright, I think because it's the Guardian a certain amount of filtering's been done already by dint if people choosing to go on there. So liberal lefty types Grin

KittiKat thanks I thought MSF looked great and then I did a few online reviews and a lot of people commented if you are in your 40's there is not much choice and as you say a lot of other people commented they got no replies. So I guess good in theory not so much in reality?

Not New I live in the East Midlands and whilst there is not a huge amount of choice there are a few guys who would be of interest to me (they may not be interested in me but that's their loss) ;)

Kleptronic sounds good. My only concern is it full of high achievers looking for someone with ambition? I have a degree but don't have a career "just" a job though I am liberal.....

Thanks everyone so no to MSF!

Well I haven't seen anyone after high achievers, just a degree, and you've got one of them, so no worries there.

ZaraW · 04/07/2014 20:09

Kleptronic thanks I read a few online reviews and they said the people on Soulmates were dynamic, high achievers so I assumed wrongly that is what they would be looking for in a partner.

Good luck and hope you are meeting some quality men!

Met DP on Guardian Soulmates :)

From what I've heard:

GSM is only good for big cities, as people say. Liberal lefty people, higher level of flakiness than usual.
MSF - I've heard nothing good about this. Anyone can fake a friend to give a reference if they want to try hard enough.
Match - costs money but has a large number of people. The money doesn't weed out all the weirdos but possibly some of them
POF - the biggest site with most people. There are some horrible, horrible people on there (men and women) but a few gems you can find. Most people seem to report bad experiences but some find it good.
OKCupid - again, free, has a decent number of people. Tends to have more polyamorists, swingers and fetishy people than other sites. Can be good though, especially if that's your thing, and there are more traditional people on there

I won't go into the details on furrydating.com and lonelyseacaptain.com, or all the other specialised websites

online dating is a business, it's not their job to find you a nice person to date, it's their job to get your money. Several sites are interconnected, and you've got to be a little cynical.

Isabeller that's great to hear a success story!
Bant it's my first time dipping my toe into OD. I find dating in my 40's a bit of a challenge the guys I meet in real life seem to be looking for younger women. I am thinking of going to a site where you pay to attempt to weed out some of the weirdos......... Will also have a look at match.
POF probably a no and OK Cupid looking ideally for a long term relationship so probably not for me?

The specialised websites sound "interesting" but not for me........

Thanks will check out the dating thread. Guardian Soulmates will be my first choice. Will need to get more cynical and not come across as green thanks!
