I've been separated for a while. I met someone amazing about 6 weeks ago. He is lovely, treats me well, tells me I'm beautiful and amazing etc. Yesterday, when I met his parents, he mouthed 'I love you'. He is a bit of a joker and I was't sure if he was serious or not. He repeated it and I said I was waiting for the punch-line. He laughed and said he was really saying 'elephant shoe' to see what my reaction is.

I'm worried that he really was telling me he loved me and now I've embarrassed him.

How do I tell? Do lovely men joke about these things with new girlfriends?I've been out the dating game for a looooong time so seriously out of touch!

I would be wary of someone who tells you they love you so soon.

He may be genuinely lovely, or he may be highly manipulative, give it time to see if he's sincere.

Some guys make a habit of running in, announcing undying love, then running off again with cold feet.

To be fair my husband said it after about 8 weeks, but I was wary for the above reasons.

That sounds odd!

I'm no expert but I don't think nice men joke about the 'I love you' line. Especially round their mum.

I don't think you embarrassed him. I think he backtracked well in the face of your confusion.

Hang around. He might say it again!

I'd just leave it. Actions speak much louder than words anyway.
