How much is your weekly food bill? (Bl**dy dh!)

Sorry but I'm mad now! We're a family of four (the kids are 9 and 7), and my husband has had a go at me for the weekly shop averaging about ?75. To me that doesn't seem that outrageous - the kids seem to have hollow legs, dh himself eats a vast amount, and whilst we don't live on beans on toast every day, we certainly don't eat lobster and caviar on a daily basis either. I try and buy organic fruit, veg and meat where possible, and we grow some of our own fruit and veg as well. We do live in a very expensive part of the south east and I guess food prices may differ?

I just thought I would take a straw poll and see how much, roughly, other MNers were spending on their food shopping.

(At the root of this, I suspect, is the fact that my husband has never forgiven me for having a breakdown and for no longer being able to be the breadwinner so that he has to work full-time... but that's going into real ranting territory and I'm not ready for that yet!!!)

If that's addressed to me, Peachy - I really meant the folk who are clocking up really huge sums (wasn't one £250 a week? ), not you!

I was being flippant, I don't really give a monkeys how much other people blow on their shopping!

hidingbehindapseudonym · 03/09/2006 16:36

Oh bugger. I am crap at this namechanging thing

It's Greensleeves.

Charleesunnysunsun · 03/09/2006 16:38

We spend about £70 a week in tesco thats all our food for 3 adults and ds and a dog!

We top up things like milk and bread a couple of times a week.
We did grow some veg this year we are planning on growing alot more next year.

sorkycake · 03/09/2006 17:11

Bloody hell, My Dh would be thrilled if it was £75. 2+2lo+2cats.
Mine always hovers around the £100 mark. I've tried to get it lower but can't/won't.

I will not buy food with excessive miles on it, won't ever buy non-organic meat, no cows milk-soya instead which is more expensive. Only Ecover cleany things. Fruit & veg is all organic, if there is a grocery organic version I buy that AND I menu plan to keep the costs down.
No processed food allowed including crisps and sweets mwwahhahaha! I'm so cruel and I know it, before you launch into me.

I don't do wipes or disposables, buy wine or fags, so fu*k only knows how expensive it could be?

Ours is about £80 a week, for 2 adults and 2 kids with everyone taking packed lunches. As much organic as is reasonable and meat from butchers. Make everything from scratch inc bread and baking. I think £75 is very very reasonable.
Everything has crept up in price if you ask me, a week in France and 2 weeks in Italy earlier this year showed us yet again how much easier it is for them to buy good quality, fresh tasty food which hasn't travelled miles.

dmo · 03/09/2006 19:58

i'm a childminder so have 17 children a week extra (please bear this in mind)
in my family i have 2ds and dh
i spend bout £110 per week with asda online shopping, i then spend about £30 at local shop on bread and milk and then i also nip to farmfoods/lidl on a wed and spend about £55

not been able to do asda online during the summer hols as i'm never in so dh been doing it on a thurs teatime on way home from work, first week he spent £200 by week 5 he had it down to £90 but i still needed to top up

dmo · 03/09/2006 19:59

o and i buy washing powder/softner from cash and carry extra

DumbledoresGirl · 03/09/2006 20:01

£75 for 2 adults and 2 children seems reasonable to me.

I have to buy for 2 adults and 4 children (aged 10, 8, 6, and 3) and I average about £100 at the supermarket (that includes toiletries too though) plus £21 a week for school dinners and whatever dh spends on weekdays for his lunch.

beebie · 05/09/2006 10:24

I live on my own with my two kids, am seeing someone but I dont feed him often, but I spend about £60 per week on me, my 6 year old and my two year old.

MamaG · 05/09/2006 10:25

£50 a week on average, me, DH, 2 kids and dog.

Roshni · 05/09/2006 21:12

£100?£130 per week for us two, our 1.7 year old and my mother who's here 5 days of the week, and also the cat. We eat organic everything that's available so that makes it a bit pricey.

Our weekly food shop (toiletries, nappies and the occasional magazine included)has just become a big issue in our house. DH found out that we've been averaging £150 per wk (Me DH and 4 girls 10, 9, 6 and 2). Three years ago it was £85! What changed I hear you all ask, because we all know 1 extra child doesn't add £65 onto your weekly food bill.
Well the main change was my decision to go organic. Over the past 18 months I became more and more obsessive about buying ethically too and now I have to face facts.
I'm convinced though that I don't have to give up organic. I make almost everything from scratch and don't buy crisps, biscuits etc but I think this costs me more than if I bought the ready made versions! For example I have been buying bags of organic flour from a local farm shop (a few yards up the road, so hows that for food miles?) that cost me £1.80 and the s'market does a bag (same size) for 50p. Thats local organic versus s'market non organic.
For veg though I have to say that the farm shop is actually cheaper (in most cases) than non organic from the s'market! I think all I need to do to bring down the bill is stop buying organic and fair trade everything and concentrate on the important bits like the fruit n veg, meat and dairy. Oh bloody hell thats most of my shopping list anyway! I can't go on spending as I have its financially crippling us and creating debt. Help!

UpsetWifeandOtherWoman · 08/08/2007 22:45

Well we have 2 cats (also a rabbit and 2 horses, but they don't come into weekly shop!), but no children yet. We are on our own and spend about 150 in the supermarket every 3-4 weeks (includes normal toiletries and cleaners but not makeup etc), plus we go to the local coop or somerfield to top up about twice a week, which is about 20-30 a time for salads, soups for work, yoghurts etc. We also buy a fruit and veg box from an organic company, which is 16 a week. Then we might go to Wallace's farm shop and buy organic fresh meats. His mum gives us eggs and odd bits of veg. But we spend loads on good food. Will have to stop when we have kids!

bonkerz · 08/08/2007 22:48

ours is about £60 in a normal week and can go up to £120 if we have to buy toilet rools, washing powder , nappies etc. Thats for 2 adults and 2 children plus for 3 extra children as am a childminder!

UpsetWifeandOtherWoman · 08/08/2007 22:48

Hubby says we spend 5-600 a month on food for the 2 of us . I think that's about 150 a week. MUST STOP.

eidsvold · 08/08/2007 22:49

when we lived in the UK - we spent 70 pounds on shopping - two adults and one baby - nappies and formula taken into account there. SO if you are doing it for four - bloody well done.

madamez · 08/08/2007 23:33

I think it's about £50-60 a week for me and 2-year-old DS who is still in nappies and eats lots - and that does include a few cans of cider for me and the occaisonal trip to the farmers' market.

I don't know how much we spend, would be VERY surprised if it was less than 150 per week. Mummy and Daddy and two very little girls.

Tortington · 08/08/2007 23:58

get him to do it. - i think if you are stuggling financially organic is a piss take tbh. if you are feeling the financial pinch you can dramatically cut this cost.

onlyWotz · 09/08/2007 00:03

£70 - £90 2+2 and 2 cats includes pack lunches for humans

Tortington · 09/08/2007 00:12

glad you cleared that up

onlyWotz · 09/08/2007 00:13

cats get nowt at lunch
