If my mum knows ive been chatting to one of her friends she goes all wierd and will say things like What have you been talking to her for...er I bumped into her in the street??? Like ive no right to talk to them.
Last night it reached a new level and she had rang saying errghhh i feel so ill...I had sort of not acknowledged that or else I end up with a day of symptoms and aches, in great detail and after a long day I couldnt be arsed umming and ahhing over it.(same story day day in day out)
Oh as i had ignored the uuurrrgghhh noises she had went from sounding dreadful to sounding perfectly normal.
However, i was still listening and talking to her when dp said something so I answered him and she she Said really quickly "oh the kettles boiling gotta go" and off she went.
I know my mum....she couldnt stand not being the centre of attention for ...what 10 seconds. Couldnt deal with the fact I was acknowledging dp and not 100% focused on her.

Weird behaviour from a 50 something adult, isnt it?

Nope.
Sounds like regular old insecurites to me.
My Mum is like it and my Nan was too and so are most of my friends Mums.
Just try to not let it get to you, or get into an arguement about it. Because (and I speak from experience) it will be thrown back in your face whenever you are ill and need a bit of support. Just try saying things like thats a shame and then change the subject. She just wants you to acknowledge her.
BTW - is she married/have a partner? Do you have siblings?

I've come to the conclusion that I can't expect my mum to behave like an adult - like yours, she really can't handle not being the centre of attention all the time. If she goes off on one, just treat her like a toddler - firm but kind

And remember not to do this to your own kids

Hi, thanks for peplying...she has no partner, just a couple of cats There me and my mentlally ill brother, thats all and he drains her.
I just find it odd coming from someone who SHOULD be old enough to know better.
I am going to wear an elastic band on my wrist and ping myself silly if I ever start the same carry on with my dds

Same as my Mum (except cat died). And I think she is a little jealous of my relationship with DH, and just wants the attention.
The thing iI find really irritating is when you dont have the chance to say "How are you?" - she is straight in there with a whine and a moan.

Yep, I have whole phone calls where I get to say...er NOTHING...and once shes told me the ins and outs and the niggly details she rings off...OMG
