Friends putting me under pressure to take drugs.

UnderPeerpressure · 15/05/2014 13:16

I can't believe I'm writing this at my age (26) but a few of my friends are pressuring me to use speed. I'm depressed and because of meds anti psychs mood stabilisers I'm a bit overweight.

Friends keep saying speed will help my mood and decrease my weight. And various other stuff like it will be good for you. I know what I should do but I'll lose a lot of friends if I cut contact and I don't have many.

If you feel like your friendships are not mutually nourishing, love yourself by closing the door on them to make way for new ones. Maybe at overeaters anonymous groups or weightwatchers?
'friend' is a term which is earned.

BuzzardBird · 15/05/2014 13:19

They don't sound like 'friends'. Sounds like you could do with making some friends. They are not.

Smilesandpiles · 15/05/2014 13:20

It's better to have no friends than friends like that.

Cut your losses, do yourself a favour, dump them and find new ones that won't think that drugs are the answer to your problems..in others words, find more mature friends.

WowOoo · 15/05/2014 13:20

You do not need friends like this.

'It will be good for you' - Come on, they are stupid as well. Prove that you're not daft and tell them to do one.

Mum4Fergus · 15/05/2014 13:20

Get some professional advice on how you are feeling...oh,and new friends!

AnandaTimeIn · 15/05/2014 13:21

It will also make your teeth fall out.

Tell them that while you say no.

I would find new friends who don, t want to fuck up my health, put me in danger of arrest, etc.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 15/05/2014 13:23

They are not, repeat not, your friends and certainly do not have your best interests at heart at all here. They do not give a monkeys about you and want you to be as much a lowlife as they are. They want to take you down with them into their pit, you do not have to go there!!.

What is happening in your life at present, are you working at all?. Are you living away from home?

You need to move away from these people and the area you currently live in. You need a completely new set of friends as well, ones who do not actively encourage you to end up with a long term drug addiction leaving you feeling even worse and wretched.

geniusloci · 15/05/2014 13:23

Ffs tell them go jog on. I was addicted to speed for 15 years, took it most days. My liver and kidneys are now shot to pieces, as is my mental health. Fri I was skinny for a bit but then got bloated and red faced and scratched the skin off my face.

Hth - honestly, tell them to pass off.

Miggsie · 15/05/2014 13:25

DH used to move in a circle in which there were several stick thin speed freak women.
By the age of 30 they were all totally emotionally screwed and physical wrecks - they looked so unhealthy with their pupils like pin points and really horrible skin.

If you want to lift your mood and lose weight, get a dog and started walking vigorously.
That way you get a friend who loves you and won't trash your health while improving your mood.

Seriously, walking or running or some form of exercise (find one you like) is proven to lift mood and contribute to weight loss. And it is cheaper than speed.

geniusloci · 15/05/2014 13:25

Yy to bad teeth.

UnderPeerpressure · 15/05/2014 13:26

I am not working as I'm on long term sickness but I do live away from home.

OP posts:
MrsCosmopilite · 15/05/2014 13:26

No, they're not friends....Definitely you need to reduce contact with these people.

You need to get to the root of why you're depressed so you can work on it. Maybe speak to your GP about the weight gain and see if there are alternatives?

I am lazy as hell but I know that regular exercise is not only good for you physically but mentally. Is there anywhere you can go to a gym or even get outdoors for a 10 minute walk to help lift your mood and start you getting some exercise? I joined a local dance class and enjoy the challenges, the low-impact workout and the company of like-minded people.

UnderPeerpressure · 15/05/2014 13:29

Nothing can be done about changing meds to ones that don't cause weight gain. I am depressed as I have type 1 bipolar.

OP posts:
UnderPeerpressure · 15/05/2014 13:31

I know what I have to do I'm just scared to do it.

OP posts:
ouryve · 15/05/2014 13:31

You need to find yourself some less toxic friends.

Fontella · 15/05/2014 13:32

They aren't 'friends'.

What friends pressurise someone into taking chemical substances that can only do them harm?

If they are stupid enough to take it then that's up to them, but that doesn't mean you have to be as stupid as they are.

Speed is vile stuff. Don't go anywhere near it. There's no 'safe' measure of amphetamine use. None. Not only is it highly addictive, the side effects are horrendous and include psychosis, strokes, brain damage, movement disorders, anxiety, depression, hallucinations, fatal drug interactions and heart conditions.

Yeah you might lose a bit of weight but it will send you nuts. You are already taking 'anti psychs mood stabilisers' and to even consider adding amphetamines to the mix is both irresponsible and idiotic.

LokiTheCynicalCat · 15/05/2014 13:33

Friends who put you under pressure to use drugs are not friends at all. See them in the daytime or strictly limit your interactions with them until you are feeling strong enough to laugh in their faces.

Given that you're already on meds, do bear in mind that any pharmaceutical interactions could be a total horrorshow. I saw this with another friend who was talked into taking drugs, it wasn't one of the regular offenders but an artificially-created one the drug-giver had carefully researched online and measured out exact doses and tested it himself, but she reacted badly and it was an awful night with copious vomiting etc.

(The drug-giving friend was horrified at their own lack of responsibility and promptly binned them and swore to never do it or offer it or any other drug to anyone ever again and to the best of my knowledge never has, this was several years ago).

tiawalters · 15/05/2014 13:37

If your mental health is not at your strongest point, and you're taking prescription drugs, please don't take any sort of recreational drugs as they can worsen your mental health and have terrible consequences long term.

Your friends do not only show how ignorant they're but also how little they care about you and your health.

Please treat yourself with love and respect, and stay away from these people. That will definitely help with your depression, or at least it will be the first step in the right direction.

Granville72 · 15/05/2014 13:37

They are not your friends. Friends do not put pressure on each other to do things, esp take drugs.

GET RID OF THEM

Speak to your GP or get a second opinion. There is someone in my town that is type 1 bipolar and she is far from over weight, she also has limited mobility so cannot exercise too much. Get outside, get some fresh air, exercise, join a club, volunteer or something and make new friends.

I take it your 'friends' have knowledge of how speed could react with your current meds and are concerned for your health and safety? No I didn't think so. Don't become another statistic

kentishgirl · 15/05/2014 14:04

You already know they are giving you bad advice, don't you. So you aren't going to start taking speed. What you need is advice on these friends. These are NOT good friends. Find some new ones. Do without any if you have to. I've known quite a lot of people who have used recreational drugs, including speed at times, and never ever have they tried to persuade another person into taking a drug.

(Just in case: speed may make you lose weight, yes. It will also effect you mentally - paranoia is common - as is general jitteriness. And that's on someone will no mental health issues and who isn't already taking prescription drugs that the speed will interact with in an unknown way.)

CiderLover · 15/05/2014 14:33

Speed will increase your mood? LOL

I used to take it frequently about 15 years ago, whilst you're on it you feel great, but tense but believe me...the come down is horrific.

Many a morning I spent contemplating suicide

Don't do it, It's a dirty drug and god knows what is in it these days.

UnderPeerpressure · 15/05/2014 14:58

I have no intention of doing it. I guess I need to drop my friends.

OP posts:
livingzuid · 15/05/2014 15:07

Please, please do not touch speed particularly if you are depressed. If you think you feel bad now you're going to feel a helluva lot worse after doing that crap. Back in my young days I dated a drug dealer and speed was always cut with washing powder or talcum powder or something else equally toxic. I watched friends develop mental illnesses and die. Dealers like to get you hooked and lead you onto stronger and stronger stuff. It's a slippery road.

You are so right. Ditch these toxic people from your life. The best way to lose weight and recover from your depression is get exercise and eat properly. Discover yourself and what interests you and base your new friends around that.

Thanks
Maisie0 · 15/05/2014 18:04

Well, maybe this is a test for you and for them too ? Can the "respect" be earned ? You can still maintain them as friends if they can accept your answer as no. You can always say something like "I want to see through pills through. No, I do not want to try it."

If they respect you, then they will remember and respect you. If they don't.... then you know if they are friendships material or not.

TonyThePony · 15/05/2014 18:15

Speed WILL exacerbate your bipolar. I promise.

Do not do it. They sound like knobheads.
