DD (nearly 18) has just told me she has a boyfriend, her first. Quite relieved that she's in a relationship, but as a father with an only daughter and having been a teenage boy myself...
Anyway. She is emphatic that I must not: ostentatiously sharpen my meat cleaver at him, force neat whisky down his throat or refer to the many flooded pits and deep watercourses nearby.
Tell me dear vipers, how did your DFs handle this sort of thing?

I read this the other day and thought it was good. I am not a Dad and my daughter is only 3 but it might be worth a read:

Grin no idea what the answer is. I just know that when I told my dad I was pregnant I felt mortified. Even though I was a) 30 and b) married
tweetytwat · 03/12/2013 18:27

I think DH is the only boyfriend I had my dad has ever spoken toSmile

madamginger · 03/12/2013 18:32

My dad said hello and have a good night as we went out the door.
you know because
A. At 18 as an adult I could date who I wanted
And b. My dad doesn't own me.

TheVermiciousGrinch · 03/12/2013 18:34

My father heartily disapproved of the first two or three boyfriends I had. I have to admit, he is a good judge of character. Grin I was absolutely besotted with my first boyfriend and was heartbroken when he ended it. I only found out afterwards that my father 'had a word' with him, which was probably why he (boyfriend) ended it (boyfriend worked for my father - still does). (I also discovered afterwards that said boyfriend was a two-timing bastard.)

TheVermiciousGrinch · 03/12/2013 18:40

Having said that, I do totally agree with madamginger though! Once your're an adult you should make your own decisions, even if sometimes they're crap decisions.

ThoraNomiki · 03/12/2013 19:59

Hopefully you showed your daughter a decent role-model as a father and she will therefore expect a decent guy for a boyfriend. You can only hope you have taught her good self-esteem throughout her childhood and that now she will be able to make her own good decisions.

cloudskitchen · 03/12/2013 20:09

My dad was pretty good really, probably left the worrying to my mum. However he did used to adopt a really loud voice when talking to my boyfriends to the point where I'd say please don't boom at him dad Grin some sort of primitive alpha male response I'm sure lol

BelaLugosisShed · 03/12/2013 21:03

Why "relieved" that she's in a relationship?

It's not compulsory you know.
I doubt she's only had the one boyfriend at 18 either.

Our DD (23) is an only daughter, only child too, DH treats her like the adult she is, trusts her judgement on men, it's nothing to do with him (or me) how many men she has sex with, she's had boyfriends stay the night since she was 17.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 03/12/2013 21:05

Not sure about the role model bit, given my scars and sense of humour.

My Dad used to stand behind them in the hall and pull faces, a couple of times he has actually sat them down and questioned them about their driving , parents, job where they live etc. But then again he was and still does look like a mafia godfather.

neiljames77 · 03/12/2013 21:56

I live with my wife and 2 daughters.
They are all roughly the same size.
They wear each others clothes without permission.
They steal each others make up.
They shout at each other a lot.
I usually sit staring into space.

I took the relieved thing to mean that he felt safer that way... As boyfriend would hopefully look after her. Although this is actually starting to sound medieval bit like MY dad Wink

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 03/12/2013 23:43

Relieved that she's not going to end up like me, an awkward bugger who DW hasn't quite civilised after 25 years. And that someone else might be paying to keep her in artisan gin and Chinese food.

That was a good article Felyne. We've had the Talk about consent, self respect and Not Behind the Bins. She's not talking to DW atm due to an impertinent question about UTIs.
